all international schools are to capacity and have waiting lists
- bottom line - more international schools coming to qatar = more jobs for teachers KG-12

down side - new schools tend to fly by the seat of their pants until they work the kinks out - personally i NEVER work for new schools

The latest census says there are one and a half million people in Qatar.
Not enough schools but several new ones are opening in September. I've heard that one school opened in January but no idea what it's called. English medium, though.

DOHA: The Outstanding Schools Oversight Committee (OSOC) of the Supreme Education Council (SEC) held several rounds of discussions with senior officials from three prestigious international schools ahead of finalising agreements to establish branches of these schools in Qatar in the next academic year.

The three schools - Sherborne School (UK); Shady Side Academy (USA), and the Dubai American Academy - run from early childhood through secondary school, and offer programmes that would further contribute to the variety of schooling options available in Qatar. �These schools offer excellent programmes that prepare students for admission to top universities around the world,� said Dr Ibrahim Al Naimi, the OSOC Chairman. �They would be ideal contributions to the schooling alternatives in Qatar.�

The week-long interaction with the officials was aimed at providing insight into the range of issues impacting education in Qatar. It included visits to the current Outstanding, International and Independent schools, and meetings with representatives of Qatar�s Oil and Gas industry, visits to the Education City universities and meetings at the American and British Embassies. The delegates expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to come to Qatar. Dr Colin Nevin, Governor of Sherborne International College said: �It would be an honour to be a part of a system that places such high value on educational development,� a sentiment shared by representatives of Shady Side Academy and Dubai American Academy.

�We learned a great deal from this visit, and are committed to bringing our school here,� said Dan Summers, the Assistant Principal of the Dubai American Academy. Trigg Thomas, Associate President of Shady Side Academy said: �What we observed here has exceeded all our expectations.� Team have returned to their campuses for final discussions with their boards.

Ministry of Ed closing its doors. No more Ministry and no more MOE schools. They're all going to be indepedent schools. Hundreds of MOE teachers have been given the old heave-ho. In fact, the number may top 1,000!! Some of these people have taught here for over 20 years and have made a big contribution to the Q education system. No thanks. That's the way it goes. Nobody gives a toss for all the people that helped teach a generation of kids, one of my friends has been here for 25 years. His kids can't handle the fact that they have to leave the country. This is home for them. Some MOE teachers have been offered jobs in the independent schools but most haven't. A big blow for a lot of families. I've been friendly with some of the guys who've taught in the MOE schools. They are devastated. The ususal - no appreciation.

Qatar�s population at 1.65m; census begins

DOHA: While Qatar�s population has grown to 1.65 million this year, the Qatar Statistical Authority (QSA) is today launching a pilot census in preparation for the country�s General Census of Population, Housing and Establishments to be conducted in April 2010.

According to QSA, the country�s population grew 6.5 percent to 1.65 million in the first five months of the year, starting from December. The population grew from 1.55million people at the end of September. The Qatar 2010 Population and Housing Census is the largest and most comprehensive statistical field operation to be implemented in Qatar. It aims to provide detailed data and information on: the economic, social and demographic characteristics of the population; housing conditions; household composition and conditions, and building statistics and their characteristics.

The massive amount of statistics and information will be collected in accordance with the latest United Nation�s recommendations and also meet the requirements of ministries, planners, researchers, scholars and decision makers. Technology will be used to furnish summary data to data users a short time after field operations are completed.
