Does anyone know what the penalty is for driving on an Int'l Drivers License? I know that you can drive only for a year and it isn't valid if you renew it. What is the punishment? I am trying to way the pros and cons of whether or not to get a Japanese license.

Hello Gordon,

I was stopped just last week by the Filth. I have both a Japanese licence and a valid IDP. I showed the IDP hoping that I would get away with a slap on the wrist (like all my friends), and not get any points on my Japanese licence. Unfortunately, the cops weren't fazed at all, and still took my details and fined me, but, of course, I got no points on my Japanese licence. Having an IDP was no problem at all, despite the fact I am a 4th year resident.

If you are American or Canadian it can be an expensive and time consuming process. If you are a Brit, Kiwi, Aussie or a Paddy it's easy to convert. Your choice. I only got one becuase of possible insurance hassles. The police though don't know about the limitations of an IDP. Hope this helps...

Did they ask to see a Japanese license? I am a Canadian and it is a real pain and expense to get a license. Thank you for the reply.

No they didn't. They assumed I didn't have one. None of my friends around here (Kyushu) have Japanese licences, and most have been stopped at some time or other. No problems, not even a fine. An IDP is better I reckon, for reasons I outlined before.

Anyway, just heard this today...

""Just got an email from the Canadian consulate. Apparently, the NPA and Canadian government have agreed on a drivers licence exchange. As of February 1, 2003, Canucks from all across the country will be able to do the exchange thingy. No tests, no driving, no nothing. Just an eye test and about 5000 yen. "

Hope it's true, eh??

It is true. Hurrah! Very Happy

Check out the link for more info:

Also, if you need to get your license translated, don't go with JAF! The Canadian consulate offers this service for your license AND driving history for WAY cheaper!
