Hi everybody

Maybe someone can help... I'm French, but have been living in the UK for 13 years. I have an MA from a UK university, and am starting a Celta course in London in May. I want to go teaching in Asia from September on (preferably Japan or the South-East: Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, etc).
There seems to be a problem though: the majority of ads I read specify they want US-UK-Canada-N.Zealand-Australia nationals Sad . Now, I am completely fluent (after 13 years here I should be!), my accent isn't strong (I did some volunteer-teaching last year in Vietnam, and no-one in my group could tell I was French - though to be honest I do have a little foreign accent).
Is the whole nationality thing an actual Visa requirement for most schools, or would they still consider someone French?

Thanks for any advice!

Celine

Hi Kmerhit

Thanks for the advice. It is so frustrating to read all these ads that say 'north American only'...
Had a look around to find sites re. Cambodia: Besides Khmer 440, any other you'd recommend? What's the score with Laos? Is there anything out there from your experience?

you might find gordon sharpless helpful-- www.talesofasia.com

also www.mekongesl.com or www.eslmekong.com

As for Laos, Ive read on Dave's that there is work there. Sounds a boring place to me, but each to his own. Very pretty, with gentle people, and a rather weird govt.

Indonesia would be an amazing country to work in--but where? Its huge.

my two cents

I don't know how it works in other countries, but in China if you just appear at the company which is currently looking for a teacher to fill the position - there is 99% chance of getting the job (I know of such cases in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen - all the people I know are not native English speakers).
