I said: What you have just stated is highly probable and highly likely that it is wrong to generalize. However, it is very unlikely and not probable that the people I have spoken to that had those experiences will not refute their assertions based on the experiences they had. Nor have these people any links or connections to each other to support the claim I have made about the French being arrogant and bigoted as they are.

Ok Austeacher. So the French friends and students I have/have had over the past 15 years area all brilliant and hardworking (this is actually true) and quite a lot more socially appealing than someone who condemns a whole people based on the anecdotes of some of his/her friends and/or family (I suspect also true, but obviously have not met you, so can't say for certain). They certainly are NOT arrogant or bigoted.

Based on your theory, my stated perspective on the French must now play a role in your own perceptions of 'how the French are.' Change your opinion - or at least your rhetoric Surprised Cool

Dear me, any other Aussie teachers reading this must be deeply embarassed. Don't worry, we won't generalise, and after all there's one in every village.

As if I care what other Australians think. Australia is the premier location and destination for rednecks, think of Queensland, Western Australia most of N.S.W, N.T and S.A.There is your answer. The only places for refuge are the city centres and there are plenty of rednecks there too.

Australia is a convict colony. I was dumped here by my parents. I did not choose to build my life here. Sue H maybe you would like to come to Australia and change the attitudes of people. You sound self-important.

Sorry .. who is it exactly that you think is self important?

Helpful folk who seem to have found a (rather pleasant) place for themselves in life ... or ..

... a little lost boy who, with at best a limited and shaky understanding of a small corner of the humanities, fancies himself to be a man of knowledge, and who thus tries (badly) to sell himself as an omniscient bombast of the type found in a 19th century drama ...

.. And as if what you've prattled out in the last week wasn't enough to go by, when you first stumbled onto the eslcafe you were even more absurd .. I daresay a further search would turn up more gems ..

How do you expect anyone to take you seriously when the only talent you display is the inability to question yourself?!

I have very little experience of the French mentality, as I've only visited but never worked there, but I feel they get a bit of a bad reputation for refusing to try to understand foreigners speaking their language, arrogance, elitist mentality etc. These are traits I'd generally associate with the English when they go abroad

I've been round Aus twice, once on a Honda 1000f and once in a camper van. The Aussies are the most generous, honest and genuine people I've met. This post is truly bollocks. If you're so ashamed of your homeland, why do you denote yourself Austeacher??

BTW, I notice your diatribe didn't mention Vic or Tas, why not? ACT I can understand as it's populated by self serving PC politicians.

shin12 - if you think SueH is 'up herself', then don't move to north Italy!!

There's a hell of a lot of snobbery in north Italy........I suggest you move to south Italy where people are friendlier and more down-to-earth.

I think you'd like the people more, and less likely to bump into/teach 'stiffs' and snobs.

Yes, Italian men might sometimes be handsome and charming, but they're also serial cheaters and liars, so you'd better have your wits about you!!

The girls are almost as bad, but the men are terrible, often having several girlfriends, and when they're married often having a mistress.

Don't say you weren't warned!!

Ciao

Yeah, please don't.

On the snobbery front it can very variable. It's fine where I live and the week-enders from Milan are looked on with wry amusement and some disdain as they are so rude. As I'm the antithesis of fashionable the local approach suits me! And I can't think of any more competitive snobbery than in a Southern Italian wedding!Smile
