Of those who have been to both, which would you or do you prefer to live in?

Also, do you know many people who just show up, look for work, leave the country and get the work permit, then come back? Is this common or is it more common to enter with the permit? Or is it more common to work under the table and do visa runs? Gracias a todos.

no visa runs here in Colombia. You get 6 months in one calendar year on a tourist visa and have to renew it every month after the first two, but you can do that in whatever big city you are in. Leaving the country doesn't reset the 6 months, so you're out of luck unless you get a work or student visa.

don't know about bogota but the weather is great here in Medelln. cute girls too!

Well I initially preferred Bogota for its energy, openness to foreigners and all the stuff you get in a capital city like international institutions.

Now I'm thinking I might prefer Medellin - transportation is a lot better there (a city 1/4 the size, but it has a metro and Bogota doesn't), its quieter and crime seems to be less of an issue. Also its warmer.

I think most folks leave the country to get the permit (those that can find an employer who will help you get one; most employers want you to work illegally under the table) - it's very hard to get a job offer in Latin America unless you are in the country already. Perhaps it would be possible from one of the organized universities or a good high school.
