No, neither one was in Wayne's World AND Bob and Doug were both supposedly Canadian. In Wayne's World, Mike Myers IS Canadian but plays an American and Dana Carvey is definitely American, both in nationality and depiction. If you doubt my expertise in Wayne's World, peruse this:

Carvey is from Montana...close enough to Manitoba in geography and spelling to be acceptable. Some of that cross border 'Great White North' humour must have rubbed off, eh? We will take him.

Bob and Doug predate Wayne's World and are reported to have provided the prototype for 2 hosers (American or Canadian) in the basement/garage doing lame but hilarious video.

Check this out.

And from my favorite section of the show: "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

I'm still pondering... perhaps being a good cook? Or is that included under "handy"?

Community College braces for first academic session

The Community College of Qatar (CCQ), which is set to begin its first class on September 26 at the West Bay Campus, marks a new milestone in the nations efforts to respond effectively to the education and training needs of the Qatari community. The CCQ aims to work in partnership with the community in order to meet the evolving needs of the nation as it strives to realise the goal of the Qatar National Vision 2030.

The objective is to provide access to quality programmes for students seeking to pursue higher education. The CCQ will also impart important career training and provide opportunities for lifelong learning.Students are to be given solid post-secondary education and critical job training to complete either a university bachelors degree or to join a career in a growing Qatar industry upon graduation.
The two-year college community concept for alternative path to university studies for students after high school graduation has roots in other countries under differing names.
The CCQ will adopt key educational and curricular innovations that will suit the educational, social and workforce ethos of Qatar while staying true to the countrys unique cultural identity and values. The CCQ has been established under a service partnership agreement with the Houston Community College (HCC), from Houston, Texas, US.

HCC was chosen from among eight US community colleges to develop a custom curriculum and institute a fully operational CCQ.The partnership agreement between the CCQ and HCC is an important achievement for Qatar as HCC is well known for its high potential in the diversity of its academic programmes and experience of international collaboration with community colleges in Asia and South America and the Arab world at large, said Dr Ibrahim Saleh al-Naimi, chairman of the CCQ Steering Committee and the projects director. The five-year CCQ-HCC partnership is part of Qatars educational reform efforts to continue towards its goal of developing a modern, world-class education system.
The reform initiative called Education for a New Era, benefits from the best educational ideas from around the world while weaving those strategies into a unique framework that serves the particular needs and ambitions of Qatars own students.

The Supreme Education Council (SEC) had announced recently that the CCQ has finalised the list of 300 full-time students for the first batch based on the applications received. Orientation workshops are to be conducted between September 19 and 24. The first of its kind in Qatar and the region, the CCQ allows students to pursue a course of study that will prepare them to either enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year institution to complete a bachelors degree Dr al-Naimi explained.
Students will be able to earn a certificate or two-year Associates degree in a select number of fields critical to Qatars economic growth.
CCQ dean Dr Judith Hansen described the launch of the college as the opportunity of a lifetime for many to contribute to the thriving economic growth of Qatar toward Vision 2030.

The ultimate goal of the CCQ is to provide education for everybody therefore those students who were tested but not enrolled will be notified about the waiting list for enrolment in subsequent semesters.
Those who signed up online and have not taken the ACT Compass test will be tested in October 2010. Students planning to take the test for the first time or retake the test should visit the ACT Compass website: http://act.org/compass - for practice tests.More full time and part-time working students credentialed are ready for enrolment as we grow into our C-Ring Road Campus beginning January 2011, added Dr Hansen.

Qataris hail community college plan

The announcement of the launch of the Community College of Qatar (CCQ) has attracted the attention of the local community, the Supreme Education Council said yesterday. The interest has been inspired by the fact the CCQ is expected to meet the requirements of the industrial and vocational sectors in terms of providing competent individuals and access to continue their higher education. The establishment of the college comes in response to an essential requirement, Dr Mozah al-Kaabi, director of the GCC Arab Bureau for Educational Training, said.
Central Municipal Council member Saeed al-Shawi described the CCQ as an excellent step which has come a little too late as there were many students who obtained their high school certificates and could not complete higher education for many reasons.

Many faced obstacles like strict admissions requirements for places in the university and/or lack of flexible conditions for employees to balance between studies and work, he said.Khalid al-Qahtani, operator of Bin Khaldoon Preparatory Independent School for Boys, said the community college marked an important milestone in the history of Qatar as the institution increases capacity building of human resource in the country.
Maha Khaled from Qatar University said it was a good move on the part of the Supreme Education Council to bridge the gap for students who wished to further their studies but were unable to due to the strict regulations of other universities.

It is a great step forward and has relieved me and many other parents of the worries over the future of our children who did not achieve results that qualify them to go to universities and gave them a chance to continue their education said Um Eissa, a parent.

The CCQ, the first of its kind in Qatar, offers two-year programmes (four semesters) leading to the Associates Degree.
This degree allows the graduates either to enter the workforce directly or transfer to a university to complete their Bachelors Degree.
The community college also grants training certificates in some fields that are highly demanded by the labour market. In the beginning, the college will start with the Occupational/Technology Degree Programmes that are not offered anywhere in Qatar, leading to Associate Degree such as Construction Engineering, Surveying Technology, Finance, Communications and Media. From the second year, the college will offer the liberal arts programmes that qualify the student after earning the associate degree to transfer to a university to continue their bachelor degree programmes inside and outside Qatar.
The CCQ responds to the educational needs of our rapidly growing economy with the community college model of access to learning for all, dean Dr Judith M L Hansen said.
The mission of the CCQ is to meet the educational needs in Qatar and to cater to the needs of students who wish to study in universities as they can study the foundation curriculum in English and maths along with the university curriculum. It meets the needs of students to join the workforce without having to complete their university studies, as well as the needs of employees who wish to improve their work status, she added.

CCQ Steering Committee head Dr Ibrahim al-Naimi said the needs of the job market in Qatar and the post-secondary education outputs to understand the real needs for a community college in the country were studied. He said Qatar needed a community college that provides scientific and art programmes that qualify students to join the university after spending two years in college.
