Car rentals are about 1,500 QR and up per month apparently. Some of the car rental firms have very vague insurance clauses which make the renter liable for accidents and repairs.


The car deal is one of the advantages of working at the Gulag.

The used car market in Industrial Area.
DOHA: The second hand car market in Qatar has become alive with the onset of summer, as a number of vacationers as well as laid-off employees are trying to sell out their cars before heading home.

The used car market in Industrial Area, where the auction takes place, is bustling with visitors these days, especially during week-ends. The demand as well as supply of used cars shoot up during this season, as many nationals and residents consider this as the best time to sell out or change their cars.

The market had been hit hard as a fall out of the recession, as people found it hard to get vehicle loans from banks. The scenario has not changed much and the market is currently witnessing an oversupply of vehicles, which has caused the prices to plummet, say sources.

A contributing factor this year is the significant number of residents, who have lost jobs following lay offs by companies on the back of the global meltdown. They would sell out their cars in a bid to earn some money before leaving the country for good. Many vacationers also dispose of their old cars during this season mainly due to the need for money.

�I have come here to sell my old Camry car which I have been using for the past 10 years,� said an Arab national at the used car market in the Industrial area, as he was looking for a customer. He had been working with a ministry and is leaving Doha for good after losing his job.

The sources say that there are more sellers than buyers in the market. The used cars market witnesses two types of transactions. Mostly, the traders buy the vehicles from individual customers and re-sell them to a third party. However, the market also offers the opportunity for customers to buy a car directly from a seller and in such cases the prices will be relatively low.

�The prices have come down due to over supply and the traders are using this opportunity to stock the cars in the hope that they can resell them at better prices after the summer holidays,� said an agent based in the Salwa Road that accommodates a row of used car showrooms.

He said the low prices would trigger a demand for used cars in the days to come, particularly because the new cars are becoming dearer in the local market.

Sorry, but I feel I have to correct the statement that "Gulagers get a car as part of the package". Actually, teachers are supposed to "share" cars. In reality, this means that those "single status" teachers with families(?) hog the cars believing it to be solely for their family's own personal use. When I worked at QP, I waited one year before N....m and S..a gave me access to drive a car in order to work at out of town locations no-one else would drive to. Bizarrely, some teachers have even smashed up "their car" and immediately been given brand new ones. Those of us who have never had an accident had to put up with bashed cars.

Man fined for reckless driving
An American motorist has been convicted of reckless driving that led to an accident in which an Indian road worker suffered serious injuries some nine months ago.
A Doha court of first instance fined the motorist QR10,000 and suspended his driving licence for one month. He has also been asked to pay, along with the insurance firm, QR56,000 as compensation to the victim.
The accident took place on November 25 last year near the Rainbow roundabout.
The court heard that the 37-year-old worker was seriously injured when the American�s car hit him. A medical report estimated the worker�s injury at 28%.
The American, 25, told the investigators that he lost control over his vehicle due to the sand on the road.
�I tried to apply the brakes, but the car moved towards the barriers and hit the worker.�
The verdict is still open for appeal in a higher court.
