Just wondered if anyone could advise me. I applied to the Victoria College this afternoon via the tefl.com website. I had a phone call offering me the job and I was told a contract had already been sent by email.
This seems very quick and I wondered if anyone knew anything about the school. The contract states I can only work exclusively for the school. Does this mean no private classes to boost income? What about taxes?
This is my first post since qualifying so any advice on living in Italy (accom provided but not utilities) would be gratefully received. Please drop a line asap. Thanks so much. |

It certainly is quick! You either made such a stunning impression on the phone and they thought they had to snap you up asap, or the school is desperate to fill a vacancy. (No rudeness intended btw!)
Schools generally prefer to hire after seeing the person, so I personally think it's dodgy. Unless the school is offering you full-time work, then they can't really tell you not to work for others.
Do you know anything about the school? The students / any "method" / hours etc? I'd be inclined to come over to Italy and have a look around before committing myself to a contract with a school "sight unseen". |

Thanks so much for the guidance. I spoke to one of the teachers (English and a returning employee) I asked a lot of questions and decided to accept the offer. I have to make a leap of faith sometime, may as well go and see what its like. At least I'll be in Italy and better placed to find my next post if it turns out to be awful, but Im cheerfully optimistic about it.
Thanks again x |
