I read so much about the benefits of a direct hire and how it is unfortunate that contractors are on the rise and direct hires on the decline. So, how do you go about landing a "direct hire"?

Go to the websites of universities and colleges and look for the employment/recruitment/vacancies links.

Almost all of the universities and colleges also place ads on the various TEFL websites (such as this one) when they are looking to recruit.

1. Apply, like Steve said.
2. Get chosen, get hired.
3. Wait 3 months (probably in your home country) on your work visa.
4. Jump through all the hoops while waiting for the visa, such as get the medical exam at an approved hospital, get reference letters, et al.
5. Get on the plane and fly there. Close your eyes real tight as you get off the plane while you squeeze your rabbit's foot really hard and pray like you've never prayed.
6. Take a long look at your passport. You may not see it again for several months.

I think this is about it. Easy as pie.

Try to do a list of which universities hire directly and which ones don't. This is what I have.

Universities that use contractors:
King Saud Univeristy = Bell / Obeikan
Princess Noura = Al-Faisal Academy, Kaplan, AETAG
Imam Saud University = ?
Al-Baha Univerisity = ?
Al-Jouf University = ?
KFUPM = ?
DCC =

Universities that hire directly :
Taibah Univeristy
King Abdul Aziz University
Taif Univerisity
KFUPM (hires directly & uses contractors)

Thanks, L. That list may come in handy in the (near) future. Paula Abdul Aziz uses contractors as well. I know they use Skyline for sure. At least they did back in April. I nearly got a job there through them, but I stood on my contract demands. None of these agencies like it when you do that. There is obviously a surplus of labor out there wanting these jobs that supposedly blow.

Yes, I can now confirm that Paula Abdul married that "Aziz" guy. But I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, she now hyphenates her last name. Very Happy

You will probably have more luck checking sites like the Chronicle of Higher Education and HigherEdJobs.com.

KFUPM does not use contractors.

DCC hires direct and uses Al-Falak

Hail hires direct and uses M-Trading

Thank you Stephen for the correction.

Other institutions that hire directly are:
Institute of Public Administration
Effat University
Dar Al-Hekma College / University
Prince Sultan University
Al-Yamama College
Prince Muhammad University

Achtung: Please note that I am not promoting any of the above mentioned institutions. Do your homework before applying anywhere. It will save you time and headache.

As much as the agency tried to polish the job, I really thought Paula Abdul would greet me at the airport.

Yes, and then she will give you and the fellow recruits numbers and you will play a new reality show called "Saudi Idle" and compete for the positions. I understand a good knowledge of Hangman helps.
