Hello All,

I'm investigating potential teaching positions in Latin America, specifically Peru, and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

I'm a Canadian citizen who has recently graduated with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing. I'm also TESOL certified and have lived in Huaraz for 8 months. I have some volunteer experience with children and adults, and have conversational Spanish skills.

I have a solid educational background, BUT I've never secured a real teaching position and don't have a whole lot of hands-on experience.

If anyone could recommend some good institutions to check out (not in Cusco), especially for a person with my background, it would be greatly appreciated.

Should I aim low or high?

I can tell you some institutes. Check your PM. Just dont' expect, visas, housing or flights. You'll get about 5 to 10 bucks an hour, which is about 600 to 1000 usd a month. Probably more towards the low end. HOpe this helps.

And thank you for the countless other posts on this forum. I've found them extremely helpful.

That said, I do have more questions.

I'm drawn towards Peru because I've lived and traveled extensively throughout the country, but am also considering other possibilities in Latin America.

What's your sense of the country for ESL teachers? What's your sense of Latin America in general for ESL teachers? Any other countries you would recommend investigating to newbies like me? If you could give me a brief synopsis, that would be great!

All of my friends are heading to Japan, China, Thailand, etc. yet I'm heading South, and can't help feeling a bit of self-doubt at times

I'm not looking for a get-rich job. I'm going down because I have a genuine interest in their culture, desire to improve my Spanish, and get more concrete experience in the teaching world.

What do you think? Should I follow the herd to Asia where pay is better, or head to a part of the world I'm more passionate about?

Not very good actually, and I'm trying to leave. . Like I said, no housing, flights, or work visas. I'd honestly rather be in Asia.
If you don't mind working under the table and not saving money, then peru will be great for you. As for me, my husband and myself are leaving peru in a couple of months and heading back to asia,
