Question one: Do you have an EU passport?
Q 2: Do you have a Celta or equivalent (except they usually leave out the "or equivalent" part).
And it's the third question that's been the real killer. In fact in some schools, it's been the second question. No, I don't have a car.

I've been mostly looking at schools in medium sized cities in the north--Verona, Padova, etc. Is this going to be a less important consideration anywhere else in Italy? Please note that all these cities have extensive public transit systems, but that doesn't seem to be good enough.

Bigger cities like Rome or Milan (where i've assumed I can only afford to live unbearably far out of town)? Smaller cities? The south? Or do I just have to go home and start over until i've saved up enough for a used Punto?

Rome / Milan should be fine without a car. some schools offer the teacher a company car to get around to all the industrial estates on the outskirts of towns. But if you work for yourself, and you're either in a small town or in the middle of nowhere (like me) you most definitely need a car.

Aside from the exorbitant costs of running a car, you might even need residency to buy one. Rules might have changed, so check this. But I needed proof of residency to get the paperwork done.

If you have a UK driving licence, no problem. But if you're ex-Europe you might have to jump through other bureaucratic hoops like changing your licence or resitting the exam.

Would be interesting to know what the most recent legislation is, so please do come back and let us know what the current requirements are! Thanks x

Oh, and for your car insurance save up now! My 3rd party insurance here is nearly 3 times the cost of my comprehensive in the UK!

Yes, this is good to know as I'm planning to teach in Italy next year. Now I know I have to factor a car into the equation. I don't have a UK licence either but an Australian one (and an international one) so thanks for the warning. Working in Spain was tough without a car but possible.
