Does an American have to return to the USA to get all their documents together to go teach in another country after teaching in Japan? |

Not likely--depending on where you go next, you might need originals and/or copies of your degrees and transcripts, but you should be able to contact your university and have them mailed to you if you don't have them with you. Getting them notarized might be tricky when you're abroad, but still doable. Passport issues (e.g., renewals or getting new pages) can be handled at the embassy of wherever you go next, and tax issues can be taken care of online.
