Hello all.

My brother and I are interested in teaching in Madrid beginning in May 2010. We both have teaching certification in Canada but have no experience teaching ESL or abroad. We were considering taking the Canterbury English TEFL Certificate Program. Has anyone taken it before? Is it worthwhile?
Any suggestions welcome!

-Erin

First, you might want to post on the Spain forum, if you haven't already.

Second, unless you qualify for a student or working holiday visa, or have a passport from an EU member country, you are likely not eligible for legal working visas for most Western European countries, including Spain. It used to be common to work illegally, but both risks and penalties are much higher as of January 2009. Again you can read lots more about this issue on the Spain forum.

Third, most contacts are Sept/Oct thru June. There is little work around in the summer months, so May is a very poor time to start. The economy is tight in general, UK teachers in Spain (who can automatically work legally) are having a hard time scraping work together, and May is just going to be a very tough time to even try, regardless of visa issues.

Finally, yes, Canterbury has a decent reputation. But they can't help a non-EU member citizen get legal work permits.
