Hello all - I recently applied for a job with the Instituto Norteamericano in Chile, and was informed that I would have to pay for my employment visa. As I am a UK citizen this is very expensive - the Chilean embassy informed me that it costs just over 500 pounds. I just wanted to know if it is normal practice for language institutes to ask you to pay for your employment visa?
Also, has anyone worked for the Instituto Norteamericano, or does anyone have any general advice on finding work in Santiago/reputable language schools?
I know that the academic yr runs from March - December, but is it possible to arrive in Santiago and find work at other times of the year, for example in July or August?
Thanks!
B.

Nope, you shouldn't accept having to pay for the visa. I'd give them a pass.

Last I checked International House was advertising vacancies in Santiago. You could check them out. Probably lots of travel time to in-company classes.

Speaking from my Colombia experience, the only time I would pay for a visa is if I were offered a job with a good university. They offer better job conditions and pay than institutes, but usually can't be bothered to help at all with the visa.
