A colleague from the UK provided details to the UK Inland Revenue of his intention to work in Kuwait. Unsurprisingly they intend to tax him on his Kuwait earnings for the current tax year.

What expenses can he claim for to reduce his tax bill?

UK tax domicile is a peculiar thing. Nevertheless if your friend is intending to leave the UK for more than one tax year he shouldn't be paying anything to the UK taxman, unless he gets paid in pounds by a UK employer.

I understood that tax is payabe if you are a UK resident for more than 90 days in a tax year.

My colleague was in the UK from April to August - well over 90 days.

If I am wrong it woud be good to know.....

You'll need to do some googling.

The point is that if you leave the UK on a permanent basis you are no longer domiciled there. So if your friend stays out of the UK for the forthcoming tax year, he shouldn't owe tax on his foreign income for this one.
