Does having a criminal record automatically disqualify you from recieving a Czech visa? And is it necessary to have a visa to work in Czech?

Spiral, you seem to be my best source of info these days. I, in fact, have a criminal record. I have a misdemeanor from about 10 years ago. I am in the process of having that record sealed(its actually a dismissal). It allows me to legally answer no to the question "have you ever been convicted of a crime?" on job applications because the process rescinds the guilty plea and replaces it with a dismissal of charges. My guess is that this would allow me to obtain a notarized affidavit which would the say "I have never been convicted of a crime." How says the Czech Guru on this matter?

Having no direct experience with criminal records, I can't say for sure, but if you have a notarized affadavit saying that your record is clean, I reckon you'll be fine. I'm pretty sure that the documents you provide to the authorities aren't checked more deeply just for a work visa to teach English.

If you wanted to train as a pilot, for example....different case!

Its interesting. In the old pre-EU days i thought you needed a czech criminal record check but not in your home country. I guess things have changed (for the better really)

I had to provide an affadavit from my home state back in 1998 that I had no criminal history. It's not new. Maybe they assumed that you Irish and Etc. were safer than us wild Yanks Very Happy
