I am brand new at all of this and am looking through all the ins and outs of ESL teaching. I have a degree but no certificate nor experience and preferably I would teach in Latin America somewhere, but it seems like its easier and more profitable to teach in Asia. My question is this, how much easier and profitable? How much money can a new teacher make in Asia? Any hard figures in U.S. dollars would be helpful. Thanks.

If you want to make decent money in Asia, you'll have to go to Japan, Korea, Hong Kong or Taiwan. In Taiwan a B.A. is required BY LAW to teach, and I believe the same goes for the others mentioned (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). The certificate helps, but a lot of people are hired without one. Other popular places to teach ESL--Thailand, China, Vietnam--do not pay as well as the countries in northeast Asia.

I can only speak for two countries: Taiwan--the average monthly salary is anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 USD depending on how much you want to work. Thailand--from $400 to $1,000 USD.

For more comparisons, see this thread:
