It takes about 6 hrs. by bus to get from Mex City to the city of Veracruz. There are 4 huge bus stations in DF, but the one you would leave from is called the TAPO. A-D-O is the bus line that will get you to Veracruz. It's a comfy vehicle, and well worth the ride so you can see some of the beautiful scenery (as well as some of the not-so-beautiful parts of Mexico City!). I have no idea of the cost of a bus ticket these day but surely a LOT LESS than plane fare.
If you decide to go by air, it only takes about 45" as I recall.
