Recently a teacher friend returned from a job in Oman.He was employed by the Al Rakaib Institute in Muscat. He had worked for 12 months and wished to resign. In accordance with the terms of the contract, he had to give 3 months notice - he complied with these terms. However, he was then called to a meeting and told that he would have to pay all recruitment costs including airfares and advertising for the Institute to obtain a new teacher.I have never heard of this before and this condition was not stipulated in his contract.
Is it legal?

Dear Omar,
I'll admit I don't know specifically about Oman or the " law " in the case you mentioned. But, having worked in Saudi Arabia for over 18 years, I'd say the locals ( almost ) always win in this part of the world. It's best to assume that " they can do whatever they want to " because the " rule of law " here is usually a lot less powerful than the " rule of wasta "; that is, if you have friends in high places, anything goes.

In Muscat, we give Al Rakaib a big miss - it's a terrible place run by a little Suri tyrant whose own wife could not even live with him so she divorced him and went to the U.A.E.He makes up all the rules to suit himself.
