Perhaps the only good thing I can say is that when I was in Halkidiki recently the local people there mostly seemed to agree that their country was in a mess and it was the fault of the Greeks, rather than trying to blame someone else! They also realise that it will be painful trying to sort it out but necessary, which is also positive compared to here in Cyprus where the Greek-Cypriots are always blaming some foreign power or other for ALL their problems, not just Turkey for occupying the north since 1974 but also for almost anything, including the recession which is now beginning to hit them!Of course the truth is that the biggest drain on the economy is the massively over manned and inefficient civil service, which even the present so-called 'Communist' government is too scared of to take on! |
