Anyone on here know anything about the schools in Honolulu???

I am trying to place a student there who is a French speaker. Having been talking/mailing a number of schools I'm finding some 'discrepancies'!

She's a beginner from what I understand, (her mother is a colleague of mine) and I don't want her going to some 'cowboy' outfit

Can anyone point me in the right direction please??? Give me solid reasons as to why you recommend or not?!

Thanks!

Kira (urgently need this in 24hrs when I talk to them!)

I know you're busy finding placement for your students, but I'm really curious about working in Hawaii - I have family there and noticed there are a lot of private schools... what 'discrepancies' have you been coming across - and what do you mean by a 'cowboy' outfit?

I feel bad admitting this, but when I think cowboy I think xenophobic... LOL

Yeah, I was intrigued by this wording too. And I agree on the xenophobic thingI wonder what a xenophobic language school would be like. o.O

cowboy: Slang. A reckless person, such as a driver, pilot, or manager, who ignores potential risks.

And well, a recent US president was a pilot.

I've come across 'numerous' schools on the net that all lead to the same organisation.

I mailed them, got an 'un-English' reply back which didn't fill me with much confidence. So I called them & found the administrators English wasn't up to much which made me wonder how 'good' their instructors are?!?!?! Hence 'cowboy' outfit.

However, I've come across one other who seems to fit the bill, just waiting to hear back from my student. I interestingly had a PM on here backing my choice & the one my student found.

Hope to give some good feedback later this year on this experience! Difficult when you're the other side of the world trying to assist someone!

Thanks all

I would suggest trying to speak directly with the ESL department at the University of Hawaii for suggestions (I've done this with other cities and they are very helpful). I don't think anyone here is familiar directly with the schools in Honolulu.

Hope you found a good school for your student...I was a little confused by your post since most of the schools in Hawaii seem pretty good - some are better/more prestigious than others. It depends on what kind of study your student is doing.

I'm sure it's possible there are some "scam" schools set up by people targeting tourists who want to learn English esp. in Waikiki or downtown areas. Actually I came across one that seemed pretty poorly run over there. If it's in Waikiki beware of "tourist traps".
