Well our Victorian ancestors did describe Bute as "The Scottish Madeira". In the recent cold spell temperatures were rarely below zero. There are palm trees on the Esplanade !
Although I now lead a righteous life I am told that the local honky-tonks are packed out with demure Scottish lasses just waiting for Mr Right.
What can Pattaya or Phuket offer that Bute does not have ? |

On a rival website I have received much flak for suggesting that "Social Housing" is appropriate for an ex-EFLer returning to his native land.
It is fine for me ! I have spent some years as a migrant worker and now return from whence I came.
It still seems strange to me that there is this stigma in Britain (especially in England !) about renting accommodation. If it is okay for the Germans, Swedes, Swiss and French why is it "not pukka" in Ukania ?

(1) Proverb
an Englishman's home is his castle
1. (UK) a proverbial expression of personal privacy and security
Related terms
a man's home is his castle
(Wikipedia)
I think this is the idea that seems to underpin notions of ownership as supreme. Theoretically, your castle could also be rented but I suppose you wouldnt have the same rights to refuse entry to others (landlords). Ideas about desirable lifestyles have always been different on the continent where, as far as I know, renters still have a lot of rights and cannot be easily turfed out. I dont know what the situation is in the UK with respect to current renting legislation.
(2)Theres a rival website??!

Housing Law is different depending on which part of Ukania you are in . North of the Solway and Tweed we have more tenant-friendly legislation.
There is a rival forum (maybe more than one !) Number of users is much smaller than this one ! Moderation on that other forum is very light so the crazies dominate.

I think the continental way of life has not been about chaining yourself to a lifetime mortgage, though this may be changing. Then again, in the current economic climate, probably not. Strong laws in favour of tenants and countries where it is socially acceptable to rent all your life tend to go hand in hand. (BTW, I did notice a ... parallel universe! Odd. ) |

Signing your life away for 30 years of mortgage sounds to me a bit like signing articles of indenture. Not for me ! |

30 years?! I signed up for 18 and paid it off in 16, thanks to the generosity of those Sheikhs in the Middle East.
I'd consider renting it to you, Scotty, but you probably wouldn't appreciate the location (south of the border) or the monthly rent! |

Scot, I would rather you live there too!)
In fact, having you just to the north of our border with the unwashed celtic hordes is a little too close for this Englishman's comfort! |

There's still a wall.
Scottish people are friendly enough. The dozen or so chip on shoulder types I've met have been teachers abroad, I'm afraid to say. I mean, would I be allowed to say I would rather live in a yurt near Ulan Bator than in a house in Pakistan? Probably not; it all sounds a bit racist and ignorant. |

PC now are we ? My experience is that ignorant bigoted racists are more often found amongst our Southern neighbours ! |
