Hi

What with Tunisia, Egypt and Algeria having had recent major upheavals - I'm wondering if anyone out in Libya can shed a little light, or just speculate on what, if anything, is happening in the Gt SPLAJ.
I've heard a couple of rumours from some of the Desert Rats, but nothing from anyone in Tripoli or Benghazi.

i doubt anything like that will happen here.

i think the colonel has pretty much nipped it in the bud by splashing out on the people; free apartments whoever needs one, great loans (returnable or not depending on short term future political circumstances) to any tom, dick and harry who needs one and other 'benefits'. It's not like this place is short of deniros. I doubt very many are going to rock the boat here if the Colonel does these sorts of things.

Didn't the Kuwaiti government recently give every kuwaiti citizen a free gift of 1500 dollars recently while each Bahraini family got 2700 dollars. It doesn't seem to have totally stopped demos but I doubt they will go far.

That's the way to deal with these nations' populations.

Who cares about 'freedom' if you can get free money thrown at you while spending your time sitting on your @ss most of the day.

Wonderful.

Hope you guys are watching events unfold from a bar/hotel over in Malta, or somewhere safe. Looks very unstable at the moment. Wishing you all the best.

Sounds like things are getting really hot over there right now:

"Two leading oil companies, Statoil and BP, said they were pulling some employees out of Libya or preparing to do so. Portugal sent plane to pick up its citizens and other EU nationals and Turkey sent two ferries to pick up construction workers stranded in the unrest-hit country. EU foreign ministers were discussing on Monday the possible evacuation of European citizens. Mobs attacked South Korean, Turkish and Serbian construction workers at various sites around the country, officials from each country said."

"TRIPOLI/MANAMA (Reuters) Members of a Libyan army unit said they had defected and "liberated" the country's second city from forces loyal to veteran leader Muammar Gaddafi after scores of protesters were killed in the bloodiest revolt now shaking the Arab world.

Two residents of Benghazi told Reuters on Sunday that members of the army's "Thunderbolt" squad had switched sides after days of violence that mark the most serious challenge to Gaddafi's 42-year rule. Al Jazeera reported clashes in the capital between thousands of protesters and Gaddafi supporters."

Free chips, fries and Fauxnoise seems to work in the US. Wait a sec, Faux is on pay Cable. But Dancing with the stars is free.

Northern Africa is in flames.

What about sub-Saharan Africa?

Any opportunities there?

Hopefully be lifted out soon but no certainty. FCO Crisis Centre has been in touch.

Not looking good both up and down the road.

What a friggin' disaster.
