I can't find anything that gives me an indication of what the housing is like in Abu Dhabi. I am looking into an international school, they provide it but how. Do they have a compound where all the teachers live or do you get to pick?

They'll either give you a set amount for monthly rent, or they'll provide housing. It could vary quite a lot, depending on the school's provisions and where this housing is actually located. Do some searching on youtube for videos of some teachers' housing.

So if they provide housing, then it's just in a regular apt building?

Almost always, yes. Some teachers are lucky and get villas.

ADVETI teachers live on a compound - but it's not a Saudi-like compound. Pretty nice actually.

The whole reason for compounds in KSA is because of the restrictions such as drinking and dress. These are not an issue in UAE so the compound is not necessary. The bigger issue is where your housing is located. If its far from your work site you could chew up alot of money in transportation costs.

Equally, does HOUSING vary with a single teacher versus a teacher that comes with a family?

Are most UAE employers okay with paying more for housing, if a teacher does have a family in tow?

Housing allowance is usually a set amount for all teachers, but there is variance by employer. For instance, in the UAE they normally provide a 2-bedroom flat if there isn't an allowance... to both singles and married. (which is far enough... after all - it is two employees doing the same job - bringing a family is the employee's option) When I was at SQU in Oman, singles got the 2-bdrm villas and marrieds got the 3- bdrm villas on campus. Not sure what they are doing now that most of the teachers are off campus. They preferred to hire married teachers with families, so their policies were family friendly. At KU in Kuwait, it was the same housing allowance, but those with children received a "family allowance" on top of the education allowance for the kids.

So... you would need to confirm with any employer at interview time what their policy is. I doubt that it will be a negotiable thing.
