I'd like some info on this school, too. They seem to advertise for staff fairly often. Is that due to high staff turnover or school expansion?

An American friend of mine (married to a local) worked for them in Lisbon, but left 3 or so years ago. She said that she didn't enjoy the working hours, but loved the city and that the pay was enough to live on.

She commented that the atmosphere was a bit snooty and that teachers had to show gratitude for the work they were given and there was a vibe that if you didn't like it, you were easily replaceable.

Other than that, there were no major complaints from her and I vaguely remember Cambridge having more than one office in Lisbon anyway. I just can't remember the good stuff she said. She recommended I go there and I sent in an application, then decided on Spain instead. Mainly because the latter answered more quickly and didn't have a problem with my 1-year full-time/2 supervised pracs/university Diploma in TESOL.

Hopefully someone else has some more recent and relevant info.

I worked in Portugal a few years ago and heard quite good reports about Cambridge School. They seemed to recruit newly qualified teachers each year,so I guess the money was poor.Portugal was a great country to work in and not so expensive as long as you keep away from the tourist dominated Algarve! Check out Linguacultura based in Santarem. They were pretty good as regards pay and conditions.

Just a quick bump in case there is anyone around who's got some extra info. I got a letter today regarding recruitment for 2011/12. They only do in-person interviews though, so it's a lot of money to get out there just for an interview.

I don't really have anything helpful to add. I took a course here about 10 years ago. (Portugues para Estrangeiros) I visited several schools in Lisbon, then chose The Cambridge School's course--the school was much more appealing to me than the others. It didn't have quite the "hand-over-your-money-we're-in-business-to-make-a-buck" vibe that the others did. I remember them as being fairly formal; the instructor was a courtly older man. The school itself was pleasant and well-equipped. (I know this isn't particularly helpful, or even on target--I was just struck by a bout of nostalgia when I read the name of the school!)

I can tell you that if I were offered an interview with them, I'd take it. But then, I really love Lisbon.

Good Luck,
AGS

Hi there,

I worked for Cambridge school in Porto.
You usually work 22 contact hours per week and the pay is good compared to the other schools - approx 1400 euros after tax each month. There is a good syllabus to follow and there is always help from the senior teachers so planning classes is fairly easy.

The downside is that they seem to think they are god's gift and you are lucky to work for them - you can never ask for any time off which I never had thankfully. Porto is also an extremely dull city which can send you mad - it's a ghost town on Sundays. Lisbon is a much nicer city so if you work for them go for Lisbon.

I know this thread is quite old but it was all I could find, I was wondering if Cambridge School only hires European citizens from English speaking countries (Ireland and the UK) or if they consider people with a CELTA who are from other countries.

I have seen that they have an add in TEFL.com so I was wondering if I as a en EU citizen but not from Ireland or the UK have any chances of even getting and interview with them...
