Hi all.

I'm looking for jobs in Europe starting in the autumn and quite fancy Portugal, among other places. I only have TEFL cert' and one year's experience (South Korean public school), so I guess I'm looking at entry level positions for the EU.

Just wondering if it's possible to live in Lisbon on 1,200 euros per month? I'd be looking at living in a room in a shared flat. I don't exactly have a mad social life here in the UK and don't spend much usually. However, I know from past experiences that, when living in a foreign place, my need for companionship increases - so I'd be looking to at least be able to socialise a few nights a week; nothing manic, just a few beers here and there, cinema etc.

Any Lisbon based teachers on this board who manage on a wage like this? Seems quite low for a European capital, but I guess not in the world of TEFL.

Thanks.

PS - Just spent six months in Italy, non-TEFL related, so if anyone who has taught in both countries could give me a good comparison on prices of everday living between the two then that would be appreciated as well.

I lived in Italy for many years.. as a child and more recently as a TEFLer,

1200 is doable (in the south), but don't expect to have lots of fun! I loved it when I was in scuola media and liceo as I never had to think about money...
However, when I moved back and had to fend for myself I found it quite depressing!, Yes you can hear people say 'in Italy the ave salary is 800Euro ( but it's not.. the ave salary is about E1100 everyone in my family - they live in Naples and my friends in Cagliari earn this) and they can survive, the difference is most Italians don't have bills and rent to pay, so their take home pay is spending money... Us Italians are lucky as our parents would never take money off us for rent etc...

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot. I'm giving Italy a wide-berth as far as TEFL is concerned. The last six months there were a real eye opener as far as living expenses there are concerned

I was teaching English in Lisbon recently and it is possible to live a modest life there on 1,200 a month. If you don't mind sharing a flat you could have a reasonable life.

If you work outside of Lisbon rent will be a lot lower.

Thanks for commenting. Care to share briefly whereabouts you were working and how you found it? No worries if not Smile

I worked in a language school in central Lisbon and sometimes had company classes on the outskirts of the city. The way I found work was the standard way. I emailed my C.V. and cover letter to 40+ [better than when I first taught in Madrid - where I had to contact over 80] language schools.

Then I waited a few days and telephoned them all. One called me back and offered me part-time work, which then changed to full-time. It helps a lot to be on the spot when looking for work.
