I am getting the distinct impression that each region of Indonesia is decidedly different when it comes to living costs. Can anyone comment on a salary of 7 million in Palembang?
The other option I am considering is 6 million in Ciburur (I am sure my spelling is wrong)
Do these areas compare? I would think that there wouldn't be too much of a difference.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Smile

In the other major cities outside of Jakarta, 6 or 7 juta is a pretty decent starting salary for a private language school. If you're single and use shared housing your living expenses will likely be in the neighborhood of 2 or 3 juta, so you should be able to live a modest lifestyle with some money left over for travel or Western comforts.

Where the heck is Ciburur? I've never heard of it.

My mistake - Ciburur is the name of a school, not a place. It is in west Jakarta. Thanks for the info.

Cheers

But Willy, you don't mention that you also have a family to support.
Most of the posters here are single and aren't interested in renting a house solo - they're willing to use shared accomodation and save a lot.

I think the question should not be "can you live on less?" but "How can Willy manage to spend so much?" !!!

Thanks for the help people. To Is650 - If accomodation is provided, is 6 million in Jakarta still bad?

So it DOES sounds like we agree: a single adult living in shared accommodation can live a modest, comfortable lifestyle on about 3 juta a month. If your take-home pay is about 6 juta, you should be living very well - or be banking about half your pay.

I've met a few teachers who complained that they were always broke. Of course, they were eating at bule-style restaurants like Pizza Hut every day and off to the Hard Rock Cafe 3 or 4 nights a week.

Of course they're broke! If they did that back home they'd be broke there too!

Wily and ISO650 show how hard it is to compare subjective values about what a reasonable quality of life is.
Willy, how often do you eat local food?
ISO650, how often do you go on a date?
But of course this just reflects what I would consider to be an acceptable life.
But now you come to mention it, I would like to know how much the "boys in the field" feel they need to take a girl out on a date.
Being a veggie not much interested in the frequency of the KFC visits. Very Happy

Dear sidjameson,
You can see our late show at When to apply for a job in 2005?. Thats it you can live a modest, very MODEST life on 3 mil after all local teachers only get 1mil and live a modest life too.

Hope your enjoying the show!!!!

Next weeks show will be whats a modest life

You save a lot by eating on the street, or at least eating local food. Eat western food every day and you'll spend a lot. More likely to get sick to really, if they don't keep and prepare it properly.

Also, living in Indonesia saves you money on toilet paper. Smile
