Hello All,

I am currently teaching in Saudi Arabia. I have been living abroad for about 3 years now. I would like to work at a school in Ethiopia. I had an offer from GYA but I had to turn it down because I was in a scooter accident and broke my arm and I didnt want to leave Korea before I was fully healed while i had full medical coverage. Anyhow I wanted to come back and teach there but I have gotten no response from GYA, so I would like to explore other opportunities which may be available. Any advice on the best way to find employment, what time of year, and contacts if possible.

About me I am a 31 year old American male. BA in international communication. Online TESOL and three years experience. Two of those being at an elementary school in Korea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

GYA gets some negative reviews here. You can turn up and look for work in Addis Ababa.

Thank you for the response. Should I just turn up can you give me an idea about how much start up money I should have realistically?

Although you can do this you should be aware that apparently a school can only hire a foriegner from abroad. They can't legally hire you when you're in the country.

However, I was in Addis 3 weeks ago and had a face to face interview with GYA and the guy told me that most of their competitors don't follow this rule ...

That is a bunch of BULL! You may get a job in Addis, but any kind of decent form of payment will have to be accompanied by a return visit back to your native country. The Ketema does not take kindly to people working illegally in their country. However if you want to work try School of Tomorrow. They will sugest a trip to Kenya or something. They dont pay a lot of money and I have found them to be extremely dishonest. You can also try some smaller language mills. I am sure they would hire you, but if you come here on a tourist visa you will have only one month. If you become illegal then you run the risk of going to jail.

Simply, I would get a the job before entering into the country. or interview in Ethiopia, return home, and come back with a business visa.

RU4Real thank you for your advice, but the problem is I have seen no school besides GYA advertise online. How would one go about securing a position with a school if there are no job postings listed online? Is there some local or international website that posts openings?
