You didn't get a stamp in your passport at the first port of entry in the Schengen Area?

What nationality are you Englishforall? If you're already EU there's no problem, as you can move around freely within Schengen area.

OP's not EU, but has been in Switzerland on a student visa, I think.

Should have got a stamp when he/she entered Italy from Switzerland, but if someone forgot, then he/she has slipped under the radar. However, ultimately some border guard may ask to see documentation dating back to his/her entry into Switzerland, and if the student visa is expired, there could be penalties.

Other problem is working without a work permit, of course.

When you enter the EU at an external (or non-Schengen) border you're passport details are scanned into a computer. Part of the Schengen Agreement states that these data are shared among all the Schengen countries. Therefore whatever country you're leaving from should know when you arrived. If they don't then it shouldn't take them much time to find out. That's the theory anyway.
