That is soooooo untrue! I have a handful of friends who grew up in Sweden and came to Canada between the ages of 20-25 and only one of them speaks fluent English- the one with the university degree in English who did a year of her degree in Canada! I am always amazed by how well my Swedish friends can get along in English, Spanish, Swedish and the other Scandinavian/Nordic languages... but from my experience their English is nowhere near "fluent". |
I have lived in Sweden for some time and Swedes absolutey speak better English than the Norwegians...The Swedes, in my opinion, speak the best English of all the non-english speaking countries (I have lived in or spent significant time in 5 or 6 countries). You can walk into any store in Malmo, Stockholm, or Gothenburg and speak English and 99 percent of the time they will respond in English. As far as jobs here your CELTA is almost useless (outside of a few hours at Folkuniversitet). On the other hand there are loads of international schools in Sweden and if you are certified you can probably find a job (either US or UK certification). |

| The best chance to teach in Scandinavia is Finland. They have excellent listening, reading and writing skills but their speaking skills aren't that great. Getting into Finland isn't easy but it is easier than getting into Norway, Sweden and Denmark. |

Finland is 'technically' not part of Scandinavia--it is really part of the Baltics. That said, I lived there for 11 years and if you are an EU citizen it is fairly easy to find a position teaching English in corporations and also some English language kindergartens. Getting a work visa if you are non-EU requires more education/credentials than your EU counterparts and most non-EU citizens I knew were in the country because of their significant others and the employers didn't need to sponsor a visa. |

Yes, I was more qualified than many of my EU counterparts! |
