I have a possibility for moving to Cairo (from Riyadh) to teach at CIC but I'm not finding much information either about the school's reputation or living conditions in Cairo. Having lived in central Riyadh for two years in less than luxurious but quite liveable conditions, I'm somewhat familiar with Middle East teaching, culture and customs.

Can anyone advise on whether CIC is reputable and, just as important, can I find a nice place to live on the $500/month living allowance? (I have the option of living in school-supplied housing too). I"m really really tired of the gender-segregated life in the Magic Kingdom but I don't need a mansion.

One of my Cairo non-teaching friends suggested Maadi as a place to live --but not for $500.

I'm open to thoughts, suggestions and advice.

I haven't heard of them, but visited their website to see where it is located. You really need to communicate with a current teacher. Personally I would start out in their housing. Then, once you learn the lay of the land... locations... prices... traffic patterns... you can decide if you want to venture out on your own to find a flat. From the map, Maadi may be too long a commute and very likely (almost certainly) out of your price range.

The challenges of living in Cairo are quite different from those of Riyadh. Egypt is a "third world" country - or whatever we call these countries these days. Things tend to be ramshackle and as we always said, "every day in Cairo is an adventure." Some love it, but many hate it and can't cope. I loved it... my favorite city in the world, but many consider me completely "mejnoon" for even saying such a thing. Cool

I only noted coordinator jobs on their website, but if and when you apply there, I would insist on being able to talk/email with some current teachers.

Thanks VS,

A friend of mine from the States mentioned something similar and I had wondered whether it would be appropriate to ask to talk to current staffers.

I like the idea of a college with Canadian affiliations but I was surprised that there were no pictures on their website showing the campus (other than closeups of students) or their location. Lots of pictures of their Canadian affiliates and fun places to go in Egypt.

But don't underestimate Riyadh in the lack-of-infrastructure department! One day they may get around to installing sidewalks and there's even talk of a public transportation system.
