I am looking for a place in Mexico to settle in for a few months and work on my DELTA. I've read some good things about Patzcuaro and wonder about other people's experiences. I would prefer fewer gringos than more, speaking Spanish more than English, don't need big city amenities, would like moderate weather and maybe the possibility of doing some very part-time teaching or tutoring. Comments? Suggestions?

There are lots and lots of towns in Mexico that fit your description.
Patzcuaro is very pretty and very touristy. A little more gringos than some other places. But fewer than bigger cities like Morelia. The nearby town of TzinTzunTzan would be an otpion if you want less gringos. Gringos visit, but usually as a couple of hour stop on a day trip leaving from Patzcuaro or Morelia.

Thanks for the advice and the leads. It does sounds pretty touristy there.

I found this site helpful too: expatforum.com

I'd avoid Michoacn like the plague right now. Just heard of drug-related violence in Patzcuaro, and the whole area of Morelia, Uruapan, etc, seems to have its troubles. There was a shoot-out in La Piedad a couple of weeks ago.

We have a small house near Zamora, but I don't think we'll be going down any time soon! Sad
