Another employee has been told by MOI/CID they have to leave the country. That makes 6 in less than 18 months (either by CID/MOI or the College). Seems excessive.

New president is seemingly only visible on the golf course (don't get it wrong, he puts in a full day and probably more - but most would not know who he was if he bit them on the ankle).

Messages in any way shape or form from the admin buildings are few and very far between. One "school" has been brought to a literal standstill because they don't have the proper authorization to operate. - whose fault is that - the blame game is being played out.

Different faculties and departments (HR notably in the latter) have announced different rules and regulations - but none are actually posted formally even on the local college website - why or perhaps better asked -why not?

The last Employee opinion survey was done nearly 3 years ago with disastrous public relation results. Informal conversations hold the general opinion another survery won't be done anytime soon because results would be even worse.

Still no signed contract with the state of Qatar.

Any idea why these people were told to leave? Were they paid for time worked? Very strange...

4 of the 6 from common gossip (there has been no publication as to what behavior to avoid etc) seem to be stupid Western (I can do this if I want to behavior) but the other 2 have more unsettling justifications.

From popular gossip and the few official insubstantial statements neither have been able to provide a real reason other than the government has refused to renew or extend visas - they have to leave.

. . . employees being told jobs ended and to be out of Qatar that week or not having return air ticket purchased and having personal belongings taken.

WTK - don't think that has been a case of the airfare not being covered but a few have had to leave very quickly.

Maintenance continues to be an issue at many accomodations - a message went out this week from facilities which seems to be an attempt to address them - where were they before?

CNAQ continues to recruit new teachers in Canada for the Qatar project.

Will there be a school for them to go to?

It's a valid question. People are getting nervous, very nervous. The official communications out of the President's and Vice Presidents' offices are less than 20 since August 2010 (the last being a promo for signing up for Rosetta Stone if you, as an individual, wanted to learn a foreign language). There are the President and at least 3 VPs - just saying hello or happy holidays or Ramadan Kareem takes up 12 messages.

My coffee buddy is looking for "new opportunities" - s/he doesn't see a future for the CNA/Qatar relationship as it is with the current people in place

Strange! I have been following posts to CNA-Q Latest for quite some time - the last post I read having been in June. I now realize that All posts originally posted after February 9, 2011, appear to have been removed from this thread. Where did they go?

I wonder. . .was there some kind of external pressure applied to Dave's ESL Cafe to have them removed?

Threads may have been pulled because they turned into troll fests as happens now and again especially here on the Qatar branch. But I can't see that a Canadian employer... from the hinterlands of Canada actually... who doesn't even advertize here... would have any pull with an American based discussion board.

Sounds like just another conspiracy theory... Laughing

Report from the NL Dept of Education Professional Services and Audit Division

http://www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/publications/qatarreports/Review_of_Overbilling_of_Qatar.pdf

Page 11 has some information on the COLA and ESG

"In 2008, the JOB approved a cost of living allowance (COLA) of 12.25% of base salary. As per Schedule A to Annex X, this amount applies to all CNAQ employees, .... . Prior to this, the College had been sued successfully in Qatari courts for an amount referred to as an "end of service graturity"... . This amount is payable unless the employer offers a greater benefit.

.....

Management within CNA decided that as a risk mitigation, they would pay the COLA as 6.25%, the remaining 6% is invoiced to CNAQ with the regular payrollbill however it is not paid out immediately to employees. Rather this amount is set aside as a reserve to pay employees an "end of service compensation" (ESC). Management advises that due to the fact that this amount (6%) is a greater benefit than that called for under Qatar law (5.77%), CNA would now be exempt from the ESG."

The complete 40 page report is a very interesting read, not least for those whose contracts, paylevels and end of contract payouts have been affected. It also makes areas of the Comprehensive Agreement related to issues raised by employees in the past

And the lastest rumor, coming after the mega salary increases announced by the government for Qatari nationals, is a 20% increase in salaries for CNA-Q employees. Hm-m-m. . .nice dream - lol.

Doubtful. Perhaps increases at Qatar government schools (QU and the K-12 sector) but unlikely at foreign colleges and universities (like Georgetown, VCU, Texas A&M, etc.) that are often tied to pay scales in their home countries
