If it's anything like I've heard (24 contact hours) - then 34zl an hour is a pretty horrible wage.

no, i think the 6.50 that the women in biedronka get is what you'd call 'horrible'. i live like a spolit bitch on my salary!

and fyi i do 18 hours a week, contract is for a maximum of 21.

no split shifts, regular hours (3.30-8.30), NO weekends, 1 hour of training per week

my school is AWESOME

Thats still 47zl an hour. I guess if all of your lessons are preplanned by the school and its mostly just "conversation" than its not bad.

I though approx 50zl/hour was normal for Wroclaw. 47 isn't that much less...

IH Koszalin is no more, rumour on the IH North grapevine, is that they have lost their affliation to IH, due to how they have been treating their staff, so IH do actually listen to their teachers!

HAHA! Good luck finding someone to take that.

That's a pretty low salary for an inexperienced teacher, let alone a fully qualified DoS.

We're seeing some salary cut-backs at Bell Warsaw this summer as well. 40 zloty GROSS for 45 min. Sad

I'm still on holiday in Poz and will be for another 7 weeks, then I'm off to the Middle East for a year or two.

I've been out with loads of my UK mates over the past 6 weeks here and none of them earn less than 3,000...none. Many have left EFL completely now or are involved in other things. One has become the face of Poznan...not bad for a ginger nut.

You can spend less than 100Zl a day but it isn't easy...you have to think about being really frugal. Yesterday I spent 90Zl and here's how it went; two tram tickets; a milk bar meal; a pack of smokes; soup in the evening and 3 pints, 1 of Tyskie and 2 of Guiness. That isn't living extravagantly by any stretch of the imagination.

Today I spent 50Zl on some groceries (no meat)-tho' I love a steak. How? I didn't go out.

So ask this question;do you really want to stay in most nights in a shoe box flat gawking at a computer? If yes-then why bother coming?

Incidentally, I've discovered you can get a 6 Zl beer in Poznan. Very few meals are under about 25ZL and milk bar food is not good.

The other experiment I did was last Thursday/Friday where I went out and had a bender with a load of mates, buying rounds etc..that was 2,000Zl.

You gets what you pays for cuz.

you need to add to that, "looking at the beer you bought for the night like it's your last supper because you were shaking in your boots while standing in line at the Zabka, hoping the cashier doesn't ask you anything so you can make a quick in and out......so you can go back to gawking at your computer in your shoe box flat."

just to keep things honest, pints of Guinness in any bar is at least 14zl, in the center, 16zl easily. replace Guinness with Tyskie and you're under 80zl, not 90zl.

my wife and I weren't able to keep it under 200zl a week for food and we had a constant food flow from her mother. you can eat ghetto, soup packets and such, but once you realize you're poisoning yourself and it's time to start eating real food, the real food bills start.

Finally got a copy of the letter of resignation from the teacher that left IH Koszalin, just to warn teachers that its the same management, lowered their salaries more this year. So be warned off Hi World in Koszalin, its a long letter but a good read.

Wednesday 4th May 2011

To Whom It May Concern.

I am writing this letter with a heavy heart, and find that I can no longer work for either International House or Glenrex. And therefore submit my notice to resign my position and employment with you, to conclude after 30 days from postdate above as requested in my contract, which means my final date of work will be Thursday 2nd June 2011. The reasons for my decision and actions are listed in point form below.

1. The reluctance by the school to treat staff in koszalin the same way as other IH schools in the group, refusal to pay us the returners bonus as stated on the International House website(see appendix 1), to me it seems totally unfair that it should say we will get it and then when teachers arrive they are told that we wont, saying that the website wasnt updated in 5 years sounds absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional.

2. The school fees for students have increased continually for the last 5 years since I joined IH/Glenrex. On the IH website it clearly stated that salaries are kept in line with inflation(see appendix 2). In 5 years in Koszalin we have never received a single pay increment in line with inflation, this is reflected that after 5 years I still receive the salary of a 2nd year teacher 1875 pln. Again the school claims that the recruitment information on the website hasnt been updated in a lot of years, this also sounds ridiculous and extremely unprofessional.

3. In the last 4 years I havent received a single increase in my accommodation allowance as per the other schools, giving a member of staff only 500pln and expecting them to be able to find an apartment for that amount of money is unbelievable, also in the last 5 years the school has refused to increase this amount with rates and inflation.

4. This year I have been constantly complained at for not attending social events and when it has been possible for me to attend I do. The clear reason for this is that the Management of the school refuse to pay for my travel expenses to attend these events, so attending them ends up costing me too much money. The expense of diesel is too high, the school will only pay me 20pln for a return trip to Koszalin from Bialogard and back, that works out at a rate of 33gr per kilometer whereas a member of management receives 71gr per kilometer, fuel, cars, oil and insurance works out the same for everyone, so therefore either we are being discriminated for using our own cars or being treated like idiots, as the bus return is only 14pln.

5. Over the past 5 years, I have received no a single direct complaint against either me or my teaching and my feedback has always been positive. My students are very happy with my methods and their language abilities continue to improve. So I ask myself why this year I am constantly being victimized and demoralized from every point of my teaching to the schools I wear, as far as I am aware no matter what shoes I wear my students arent coming to see what I am wearing but to learn. On one occasion I was in Koszalin at 0600 for surgery on my mouth and was wearing boots, and left my schools in the car on the other side of the city, I was called into the office to justify my shoe sense. After receiving medication to relax me, my mind was totally aware and was advised by the surgeon to go home, but I went to work and was in total pain when teaching.

6. In the past 2 years I have requested 2 days off and both occasions these days have been refused. The first day being the day that my mother died, the response that I received was that there was no one to cover my classes and there I must go and teach my classes. On the second occasion my wife had a miscarriage and was in total distress at home, on this occasion the school refused to call students and again told me that I must go and teach my classes. These actions from the management of IH Koszalin arent only unprofessional but are also totally inhumane.

7. In April this year, I was advised by my doctor to take 2 days off during the Easter Break and May holidays. I received an email giving me less than 24 hours to produce a doctors certificate to prove this matter. After speaking to my doctor he advised me that it wasnt possible for him to give me a certificate as IH/Glenrex do not pay Zus payments to the Polish state and that if he did it would be incriminating for him. I was then asked to produce a letter on letterhead from the clinic, signed by the doctor, and stamped by the clinic. In response the doctor said that would be a certificate, and that it is not his job to write letters for employers and that he would be more than happy to give me a certificate when I produced a Zus certificate. After getting more clarification on this matter it appears that my doctor was right and that also under Polish Employment Law, and employee working in the State of Poland is entitled to 2 sick days without any certificate or justification, all you have to do is inform your employer as I did.

8. My kids classes this year, have requested me to take them bowling as I did last year. During every lesson they have asked about the date and I have redirected them to the school secretary to ask. On Wednesday 13th April 2011 it got to the stage when I had to agree to take my students bowling in May at my expense as IH/Glenrex seem to refuse to pay the maximum of 200pln for the students, so yet again this activity will result in costing me more money from my salary.

9. My students in Bialogard are constantly asking why their lessons are going on unobserved this year, as they are used to seeing a senior member of staff during at least one lesson throughout the year. And after the situation with one of classes in Bialogard which I would like to make clear is NOT one of my classes, the reputation of the school continues to deteriorate, and I really do not want my name to be used in the same manner, and therefore feels to be neglected and forgotten about by the school.

10. There seems to be a common problem with the management of the school as to why I do not attend teacher training on Fridays. I went to IH Koszalin for the first teacher training session at the start of the year and sat for 2 hours till a member of staff came in and told me that the timing had changed and that the new time would totally take up most of my Friday. This is connected to point 4, and that Radek refused to cover my travel, and that the rumor is that I dont come due to private lessons, I would like to take this opportunity to categorically deny this viscous rumor, I do my lessons in the evening and at weekends, which I am entitled to do as it is my free time.

11. At the start of December 2011, my back started to give me extreme pain and I waited a few weeks to see if it will heal, with gel, cream and painkillers. After an extreme 2 weeks of pain I went to see a specialist and he directed me to immediately have it scanned, x-rayed and to do a USG on it. When I called the school to tell them about what the doctor had requested from me, I felt like I was in a court of law and it got to the stage that the School Secretary had to speak to my wife and was rude towards her too, questioning her like she was being investigated. Even if, the day before I went with a member of management and was prescribed strong painkillers and an injection of Ketanol straight into my back. At this stage my specialist wanted me to take 2 weeks off sick, but again I refused as I knew I would be persecuted by the management for being sick, and continued to work whilst having 10 sessions of physiotherapy. Earlier in the year another member of the teaching staff reecived a week off due to an eye infection, and I am treated so unfairly for taking 2 days off. If I waited too long to go to the doctor that was due to the fact that I didnt want to let the school down, but seems that was wrong of me. So I again seem to ask myself who is acting in an unprofessional inhumane manner.

12. 2 years ago on the 17th April 2009, I arrived in Berlin after visiting my mother in hospital, on the 9th and 16th April both being Thursdays I called the school from my mobile in Egypt to confirm that my salary had been transferred into my bank account to insure that I would have sufficient funds in my account to cover my return to Bialogard. When I arrived at Berlin Tegel Airport, to my astonishment I realized that nothing had been put into my account after being assured it would be done prior to my arrival, this created a situation where my wife had to leave her work early and rush into town and deposit money in my account to ensure that I could afford to buy a bus ticket to get home. This was 19 days after the salary should have been paid. Again this behavior by IH/Glenrex is totally unprofessional, insensitive and extremely selfish.

On every occasion I have been able to help the school I have, even 3 years ago when the school was going through a financial problem I offered to help the school but lending the management money that I was saving for my wedding, so it seems ridiculous to think that I dont care or worry about the school.

So therefor it is due to the above points, and also that now it seems to cost me money to work for IH/Glenrex, that to give myself peace of mind that I will resign, I have no hesitation in doing this and only regret that my students will suffer and therefor all I can do is just apologise to them.

Yours Faithfully,

Sir,I didn't have time to read all of your post but I skimmed over it.

It sounds like you have the beginnings of a Russian novel there.

Loads of drama going on with you.

Good luck with it!

Love your posts Mr.Sharter. You tell it as you see it.

Are 90% of the Poles still living on those Knorr soup packets and Biedronka "mystery meat"?

When I lived there, that along with warm Tyskie, made up the majority of my diet.

If I wanted to afford a ticket back home,I had to cut corners everywhere possible. This coming from a guy who didn't smoke or drink too much and rarely went out on the town or to restaurants.

At the end of my tenure in Poland,I still needed to borrow dosh from my mother to afford the ticket out of Poland. Very sad indeed.

most of them refuse to admit it, but their diets are far from what they pretend it to be.

they'll tell you it's all "natural" food and shun anything (in conversation) that resembles fast food, yet they seem to have no problem whoofing down Prince Polo every day, eating those radioactive soup packets, going to the "bar" to eat some greasy slimy pile of pierogi, eating those vile zapiekanki covered in ketchup.....sorry Poland, but you'll have to find something else special about Poland to cling to.

Confused

I'll never forget the time whilst living in Poznan that our class had a lesson about fast food and obesity. One teenage guy in particular was railing against the evils of fast food and how he despised all the McDonald's joints that were going up around Poland.

The next morning,I popped into the McDonalds that was near our school, and noticed the same student sitting there at 10am,wolfing down a big mac and fries.

That pretty much sums up the Polish mentality right there.
