Dear John:

Sad thing is, people like my well-meaning parents will jump at the chance to vote for Rick Perry. After all, he's clearly a 'man a god,' (like Bush) having just held a religious rally last week. They won't understand the stimulus double-talk or the potential dangers regarding international affairs or any of the other implications of an actual presidential Bush redux.

So many seem to fall for the catch-phrase approach these days. Heavens, we teach ESL students things like 'critical thinking' and 'detecting opinion and bias' (well, in Canada we do - not sure about the US ESL scene). Those aren't meant to be geared towards influencing opinions, but giving English as a second language speakers the linguistic skills to detect bias and slant and etc.

Perhaps should be mandatory for US voters....

Best,
spiral

Spiral, some 'Mericans find that folksy accent and style of speaking appealing because it doesn't sound pretentious or uppity and thus, comes across as trustworthy and neighborly. Politics aside, the same has been said of Sarah Palin, but her use of sentence structure is uh...

But it's all too often just a ploy:

"Common man
The "plain folks" or "common man" approach attempts to convince the audience that the propagandist's positions reflect the common sense of the people. It is designed to win the confidence of the audience by communicating in the common manner and style of the target audience. Propagandists use ordinary language and mannerisms (and clothe their message in face-to-face and audiovisual communications) in attempting to identify their point of view with that of the average person."

Exactly. This is one of the tactics we teach on 'detecting opinon and bias' courses, along with 'glittering generalisations' and the 'fear (also known as 'us vs. them')' tactics.

I know you're right, but whatever happened to aspiring to be (and sound) well-educated? Maybe there is a link with the decline in educational standards and the wish to sound (and be around folks who sound) poorly-educated.
