I came across the International House recruiting (IH) web page. Apparently they have schools and colleges all over the world. They seem to have branches in Jeddah, Al-Jawf and Dhahraan. Has anyone ever heard of them? If so, are they any good? Anything about them would be of help.

Thanks in advanced

If IH have a presence in KSA it is possibly under another name.
Or they are recruiting for some outfit here.

In the world of EFL internationally IH is big. Have you really never heard of them ?

They were leading lights in the introduction of "Communicative Methodology" - and all the bullsh** that goes with it.

IH do indeed have branches in the Kingdom, I think in Damman and Jeddah? They advertised on DAve's not too long ago - but the salaries were appalling by Saudi standards (on the Berlitz level) and holidya entitlements etc were rubbish.

Ih are more likely to have sold their name (and soul ?) to a local businessman.

Protectionism means that foreigners still cannot do business here in the KofSA.

I think franchise schools like IH are the worst paid jobs in the Gulf

These franchises are the pits. Better to work for Ali Abdulla's English Akadamy(sic). At least you expect him to rip you off.

Scot,

IH were definately advertising under their own name a few months back.

And, while you're right about foreigners not being able to own a business in KSA, I'm sure that has more to do with the fact that they probably have to have the business under a Saudi name or something.

If it were truly the case that no foreign company could operate, every shopping centre in the Kingdom would have to shut. Besides, what aobut our friends Berlitz?

IH is a franchise. The fact that it is a non-profit organization means that educational quality is higher than Berlitz and EF, and if branches abuse their staff IH can take back the franchise without being bothered about losing the money.

Having said that, a lot will depend on the individual owner. The advantage of working for IH is that you can get a job easily anywhere else you want, and the experiece will not be looked on with suspicion, as is experience with Wall Street or Berlitz.

Yes, International House does operate in the Kingdom. When I heard they started a branch here I was eager to work for them, but I was shocked at the low salaries they paid. It's similar to Berlitz and EF, they offer low salaries, have more working hours and its a 6 day week. There are a lot of unemployed people out there thats why these places still manage to get teachers. Most of these schools hire a couple of native speakers and the rest arab teachers who get paid about 2000 riyals. I think its scandalous that places like these are allowed to operate, they have no respect for their foreign teachers.
