Egypt will require visas from all travelers prior to arriving in the country, ending decade-long unrestricted entry for American and other western visiters, and some other nationals, the Middle East news agency reported Thursday.
Foreigners in Egypt have already begun to face a clamping down on visa restrictions since 25 January, with some reporting that Egyptian officials have begun rejecting a second three-month visa extension for those already in the country and substituting them for one-month extensions only.
MENA quoted a spokesman for the government as saying that only tourists coming on pre-arranged package tours will have unrestricted entry to Egypt.
Mohamad Hegazy said a new government decree will require that all visitors apply for a visa from an Egyptian embassy abroad.
Hegazy did not explain the motives behind the new measure or say when the new regulation will take effect.

Talk about repeatedly shooting oneself in the foot. According the rumors on the street, this little piece of idiocy by the new government is all about keeping the spies out.
Yes... I laughed hysterically at that one too. Of course, it will merely keep out paying tourists... in a country that lives or dies on tourist income. And spies will, as always, waltz in with no problem as they have always done. Heck... most of them are officially attached to various embassies. Everyone knows it.

Well, it appears to have changed.
Again.
"The Egyptian government reversed their decision that would have required tourists to get their visas ahead of time instead of buying them at the airport upon arrival, as has been the case for years"

There are elections around the corner and the foundation of the Revolution was unemployment/cost of living. I think we will see tourist visas limited to three, maybe four months, no matter what the political outcome is over these next few months. |

I haven't passed through Facebook yet this morning, but glad to see that common sense has prevailed - for the moment. But, I agree... the tourist visa renewal system will change. We'll just have to wait and see the end results. But, it has caused a number of my friends and acquaintances who had planned to retire there to rethink their future plans.

That doesn't change the fact that you used the word "but" not only excessively and unnecessarily, but ungrammatically as well.
I also heard that after 44 years of posting, they sometimes require re-registration.  |

I once dreamed of traveling to Egypt someday. I wanted to enjoy all the exotic sights, smells and sounds of an ancient culture and civilization.
Now there are restrictions on tourists. More restrictions are sure to come.
And Egypt is becoming less stable and more violent.
Traveling to Egypt...
...it's scary!

At this point, there have been no restrictions on tourists or tourism. In fact, tourism - and the money tourists bring - is what Egypt needs, so if you have the notion to go, do it.
But, you will want to do it soon because there's no telling what will happen after the elections, which are starting in November. |

Thanks for the advice, Colleen.
But I have no immediate plans to visit Egypt.
Prior to the fall of Mubarak, I already had plans to travel to the Philippines later this year or early next year.
And Japan may be next. It is another ancient culture and civilization I've always wanted to see. It is a land filled with exotic sights, sounds and smells.
Egypt will have to wait...

Personally I would do Egypt NOW for two reasons. One, we don't know what is going to happen after the elections or in the next few years. And second, it is great to visit Egypt when tourism is down. It is so pleasant to visit all the sites without all the crowds.
Japan and the Philippines will be pretty much the same this year or next year or the year after.
