Hi everybody,
This is my first time here writing a post. Does anybody know where I can look for a TESL job in the Dominican Republic? I've already checked the DR1 websites. If anyone has websites or contacts that I can call it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance and have a nice day.
Hasta Luego!

If you check the DR1 website then you will know I just posted the name and contacts for a private school in Puerto Plata.

Of course, over there I post as Mainegirl.

If you have master's degree in TEFL I suggest you contact Hillbilly on the board. He and his wife work at PUCMM in Santiago.

See item #5 in bold type below. I learned of this position via a longtime poster over at DR1.com

Teaching Positions Dominican Republic's first STEM magnet school

Job posted by: PROEA

Posted on: September 25, 2014

Job description

The school

The Liceo Cientifico is Dominican Republic's first college prep, STEM+Green, public magnet school and currently serves 250 gifted and talented 9-11th grade students, who come from poor rural families of the Hermanas Mirabal province in the island's Cibao Valley. 35 faculty, including international teachers from Puerto Rico, Spain, Chile, the USA, Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Haiti, work along Dominican teachers, to provide a STEM focused, high quality international education. The Liceo Cientifico, while a public school, runs with considerable autonomy (similar to that of a Charter school in the USA), and follows best administrative practices with the support of three government agencies of the environment, education and sports. Designed to be a center for innovation and experimentation, within the context of the Ministry of Education's innovation initiatives, the Liceo is in its 3rd year of existence and will graduate its first 12th grade class in 2016. Recently, we received approval to expand and become the island's first 7th to 12th grade public school.

We are recruiting international faculty in all content areas of specialization, to co-teach and serve as as mentors for local Dominican teachers in training, who after a year of professional support, become full-fledged teachers. Classes are small, about 20-25 students, with100 students per grade level. A converted 10 acre industrial warehouse complex with ample green spaces, serves as our campus: a new purpose-built campus is in the planning stages for construction to start in 2016. Classrooms are large and well equipped by local standards, with multimedia capacity and internet access. A sports complex, farmland and greenhouses and a 42 sq km nature preserve provide ample opportunities for innovative teaching, and a diverse enrichment program. We believe the entire island is our classroom and actively promote experiential learning and service learning throughout our curriculum.

The Location

The Hermanas Mirabal province is ideally located in the island's north east quadrant: equidistant from Santiago (30 min) and San Francisco (20 minutes), DR's second and third larges cities, with all the expected urban amenities. Its namesake honors the Mirabal Sisters (In the Time of the Butterflies-Julia Alvarez), freedom fighters who were killed by the dictator Trujillo in the 1960's. Known for its peace initiatives and arguably the largest public murals project of the Caribbean, the province is located 1 hour from the beautiful north coast watersports paradise of Cabarete, and 2 hours drive to the Samana peninsula, with some of the best beaches, whale watching and kayaking opportunities in the Caribbean. The Central Mountain range is 1 hour away, with a variety of hiking, canyoning, horseback riding, rafting and mountain trekking opportunities, including Pico Duarte (10,000 ft), the highest mountain in North America east of the Mississippi river. While the province is rural, its character is rapidly changing into a suburb, in between two rapidly growing cities. Santiago international airport is 20 minutes away and offers daily flights to the US, South America, and Europe. The capital, Santo Domingo, has a charming colonial center, a population of 4 million, and the economic hub of the island, is about 2.5 hours drive away.

We are considering candidates for the following positions:

1) Science (biology, chemistry, geology, physics and environmental science, agroecology).

2) Math (Prealgebra, Algebra, Advanced Algebra, PreCalc, Calculus, Statistics)

3) Spanish (as native language, Caribbean Literature, LatinAmerican Literature, World Literature with a focus on writing skills)

4) History (World, LatinAmerica, US-Western World, Geography)

5) English as a Second Language (7th to 12th grade)

6) Engineering (Project Based Learning)

For all positions except English, candidates must be fluent or near fluent in Spanish, which is the language of instruction. Candidates must have at least a BA or BSc with 2 years of teaching experience, although talented novice teachers may be considered. The position is full-time year round position with a salary of 50,000 pesos (about 1250 USD/month) and free housing. Offers are typically a 2 year contract with the possiblity of renewal, via the Ministry of Education.

Hmmmm. . . Seems to be competitive, or better, for the area, assuming the housing is adequate. Qualifications required are minimal. I'm not familiar with the school, but at first glance it seems interesting, and worth a more in-depth look.

Or better, given that the average language school gig would net you, at best, about $700/month and, likely, a bit less. If you've got the teaching credentials to teach at one of the elite international schools (e.g., Carol Morgan, etc.) you could, of course, do much better.

But $1,250/month plus housing is more than sufficient to live comfortably in the DR, particularly in a rural area like this. Of course, if you're seeking to pay off tens of thousands of dollars in student loans or aspire to buy a vacation home at one of DR's many luxury resorts (of which there are none in the Cibao Valley) then . . . well . . . this probably isn't the job for you.

As I found out about this position via a reliable source over at DR1.com, I'd definitely say investigate further if you're interested.
