Hi everyone,

I am from Indonesia and I was recently granted a one year Work and Holiday visa in Australia. I will move to Australia next year and need to know the employment opportunities.

Is there any national/standardized qualification in Australia to be a teaching assistant? I possess a Diploma in Child Psychology and Learning Disorder Management issued by Singaporean college. Will that be recognized in Australia? If my aim is to work as teaching support in special school, do I still have to be registered first to work in school setting? What else would I be needing? Police check? (The regulation is very loose in Indonesia so I need to know if there is more documents to prepare).

In addition i also have a Diploma in Montessori Education. Would that allow me to be teaching assistant in Montessori school?

Thanks a lot Smile

Alaneira,

There are employment opportunities in Australia as a teacher's assistant. That is of course if you can find work. Employment in education has been a slow decline downwards not in the ascent, trust me I should know I live in one of the major capital cities. Do you have an undergraduate degree related to your post grad studies? In other words, are your methods in Child psychology at diploma level connected with your undergraduate studies? If they are not you will have some problems and that is no lie.

Montessori qualifications are in relative demand, they are not screaming out for them in the capital cities. Montessori quals have more relevance in places like Hong Kong or the European continent. The education system in Australia does not do much for accomodating novice graduates. Most leave for greener pastures like the U.K or Europe. Though the way the global economies are heading at the moment many more people will be out of work in 2012, the negative signs are there. Unemployment is on the rise.

I have been out of work for two years. I did the usual under grad degree and post grad studies in specialist education. But it has not guaranteed me employment, I iterate, unemployed for two years.

In the short: Yes you will need a police clearance from your country of origin being Indonesia. If you are not sure that your qualifications meet Australian working requirements contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. AKA DIMIA.

This is a warning to you: Do your homework scrupulously. There is not much in the form of professional employment in Australia, most professionals leave Australia because of the bureaucratic red tape that stifles every movement of documents from receiver to deliverer. Australian bureaucracy is very slow and you could be waiting for months before you know if your qualifications are suitable for Australian schools.

You may be able to get teacher's assistant work considering you are Montessori qualified, but there are no guarantees in anything related to education in Australia. It is dead, I know it is negative news but it is dead. And do not believe what anyone tells you until you see it documented on a contract.

Universities should stop making an issue of attracting students to their courses in Education when there is no work at the end of their course. It is simply false that there is employment in education. Universities advertise on the net that there is a plethora of work when the case is they are merely letting the courses run to keep academic educators employed according to contractual obligations. University administrators, stop feeding misleading information that there is a high demand for teachers, that is flatly wrong.

So you have two diplomas but you want to be a teacher's assistant? I strongly recommend you contact DIMIA. Contact DIMIA because if you do end up coming to Australia without getting an informed opinion on whether your qualifications meet Australian standards for employment in education, you may end up working as a cleaner or waitress.
