Dear All

I have just done a CD with a class of mine and the following lines were in the script:

This feeling is even stronger for extreme sports, where the person faces real danger.

A student asked me why the writer had used the word 'where' and I could not answer it. Can anyone help?

Sincerely

Charlie Warth

"Where the person feels real danger" is an adverb clause. Adverbs answer the questions "Where, when, why, how, to what extent and how much". Adverbs/adverb clauses can come anywhere in a sentence, so this one is correctly placed even though it is not next to the word it is modifying. I hope this helps.

I think I would replace the word where with when.

I have been here twenty years, and I have never known what an "adverb" was. Thanks.

Where is often used to describe situations. So in your sentence, the situation implied is extreme sports, in which situation the person feels real danger.
