Not directly regarding teaching positions there, though I've spent time in Hargeisa and visited the university campus there in the not-so-distant past. I know they are trying to expand and develop rapidly in (from what I saw) a difficult and severely underfunded environment which would be both fascinating, and an extreme challenge to work in. You may already know all (or indeed far more than) that, but if you do want any general info regarding the city (or university), feel free to PM me.

I dont have enough posts to PM yet - my question is, how safe is it there? Thanks

In all honesty, it's not entirely safe: or not entirely safe to live freely in. The only other Westerners I came across in the city were UN or NGO personnel staying in one of two large, well-guarded hotels. The elections last year were cancelled due to unrest and re-scheduled for 2012. No guarantee there won't be further problems or that what's occurring in Somalia and Puntland won't spill over, as it has at times in the past. As Somaliland is unrecognised by the UN as a state, there are no embassies there and thus limited help or support if you get into difficulties of any kind. The airport is a nightmare - not even any electricity when I went through - and getting in or out by land involves a 24-hour 4wd road-trip across the desert to Djibouti or a truck-ride over appalling roads into Ethiopia. The people were incredibly friendly and working at the university would no doubt be a culturally fascinating experience, but unless you're well-travelled, self-confident and experienced in living and working in challenging developing-world environments, it might be best to look elsewhere.

I think Im up for the challenge. Ive worked in India, Mexico and South America. It does sound absolutely fascinating! Thanks again for your input.

The best person to speak to is the Course Coordinator for the English Language Department.: [email protected]

I was offered a job with them a few weeks back, but unfortunately had to turn it down due to personal circumstances.
