greetings,
i'm looking into teaaching opps in Poland and am curious about the food...is it as "meaty-starchy" as often portrayed, or are there more vegetarian-friendly options?
i'd appreciate your insights.

Yeah, vegetariamism was once a dirty 4 letter word in Poland but is becoming more accepted now (so I hear). That being said, the main staples are still meat, fish, and potatoes (the Bigos is to die for though). I knew a few vegetarians when I was there and none of them complained of it being a problem... |

Agreed. Bigos is to die for. It must be homemade though, the store bought stuff isn't that great. |

And it must be 50/50 fresh and pickled.
Some people make it without meat as well. I believe they add more mushrooms and we know how good they are in Poland. |

Bigos is cabbage with sausage (Kapusta & Kielbasa) with some other things thrown in if you want...sort of like the national dish in Poland...I like it and I otherwise despise cabbage in any form...the other writers are correct though...I had some Bigos in Szceczin Glowny (main train station) and it was okrupny (horrible)...definitely the homemade stuff is the best...as I am writing, I am longing for it right now |

Yup!!
Poland has mushrooms, it is a national obsession to go out and collect them from now until late October. A good 6 weeks, so go looking.
I refer to Boletus Edulis and similar edible non-halucinogenics. The best is an umbelliform called locally Sowa (OWL) up to 14inches high and 8 across two together look like the eyes of an owl. Incredible taste.
These others do exist.
I saw my best examples of Amanita Muscaria in Poland... Football size... English football! (basketball size)
If you go, do it with someone local who knows their 'shrooms...
There are old mushroom pickers and bold mushroom pickers, but no old, bold....... |

Mushrooms aside, the best bigos I have ever had was made by an old lady who's grandson I gave lessons to for cooked meals. In town, I paid about 5 zlts. In Krakow , I paid 25. Both were excellent. |

so Bigos gets unanimus approval then! It's been yrs since I've eaten anything remotely like sausage...and I'm reluctant to revisit it. But beings it's such a central ingredient to many well-loved dishes there, I'm wondering if I can justifiably avoid it.
To refresh my original question: alot of white/refined flours and sugar?
How "open" are the Poles you know to alternatives to refined flours, sugars and "health foods"?

If I recall, I cannot remember seeing too many health stores in Poland...I do seem to remember there some talk about food grown there being "organic" or more so than the rest of the EU and how that might become a big thing in Poland...you must understand that this sort of thing is still in its infancy there...anyone else have any more up to date info on that??? |
