OK, it's pretty much settled that I'll be over as early as the new year. Should I apply for some kind of working holiday/looking for work visa that would reduce an employers fear that my proper visa would be denied?
I'm thinking of getting an unlocked Nexus 5 from Google because I hear cellphones are expensive in Japan; based on the bands specced on the product page, will it work over there? https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_5_32GB_Black?id=nexus_5_black_32gb
Do they sell them in physical stores over there without a contract? Do service providers have decent deals for a SIM and montly 3G? I mostly use 3G and almost never use the actual minutes or texts due to facebook/Kakao (S.K.s version of LINE). |
If you're eligible for a working holiday visa and are able to get one in time then I'd get it. You can work where you want then |

If civil war doesn't break out in Thailand, then that might be my next stop (???) |
Thailand is played out big time and the spill-over from the TEFL'ers that can't make it there is flooding into Vietnam now. But China is always in need of teachers... I wonder why?
I would have hoped there is some chance of picking up work in Japan... |

Huge country. Supply is low, demand is getting bigger, particularly as more people get more money to burn on English lessons.
I'd venture that one in a Chinese First Tier city could make 150 to 250 RMB (or more!) per hour doing private tutoring, particularly for junior high schoolers looking to go to America for high school. Even in an upper Chinese Second Tier city, 150 to 250 RMB (or more!) per hour can be the going rate. This phenomenon only seems to be gaining more and more steam these days.
Good luck to all in trying to get people to pay 25 USD to 40 USD/hour for private tutoring in the Japan nowadays. Probably ain't gonna happen unless one has been around for a long while and has established a solid reputation.
Warm regards,

WHVs have certain restrictions, such as the number of hours you can work, and there are tax implications also (I think you have to pay higher tax rates?). Also, they are only available for citizens of certain countries. But, it will give you 6 months to a year when you can work in any type of job, part-time or full-time, which would be appealing to some employers. Not sure on the processing times for WHVs though, or whether you need to go back to your home country to get it. I'm not sure what a "looking for work visa" is, and I doubt that something like that exists. |

China's definitely the place to go, if you're in a tight spot. |

Thanks for the info. I'm an Irish citizen. Maybe I should shoot the Irish Embassy in Japan a mail to see what's up with that working holiday visa, or just risk it and enter the country on a tourist visa and hunt like crazy for a job. |

Or unless you have the balls to actually ask for 40 USD / hour, you look and act like you're is worth that much, and you don't worry about the clients who balk.
By the way, if someone's paying you 40 USD / hour or more, they'll respect you and they'll respect your time.
Just saying. |

South Korea is as well. Japan is OK, if you really want in. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. As it is hard to get into, and even if you do get in, you have to hustle to make decent money.
I think Vietnam is still pretty good money/opportunity wise. Or it was until recently. I wonder if the Thai troubles are making a lot of ESL refugees? |

South Korea 'is' the tight spot and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Great place to live, horrendous place to work.
Can anyone recommend any facebook groups I should join for the job hunt/living in Japan in general? Seems to me people have moved away from using forums and are more keen on using fb groups these days. |

What does that mean? According to other sites jobs are abundant depending on timing and determination. I'm going to Thailand for a year just to get some more experience before I go back to Japan. |

Decided not to "show up at the door" and look for jobs in japan ;p
Supposedly people recommend this method but I don't think I'm gonna do it. Getting too old to be showing up and knocking on doors ;p |

This seems like a strange move, can I ask why? Why can't you get the experience in Japan? |

Waygeek I guess I could. I taught in Japan 8 years ago but I'm choosing Thailand right now I guess for more of a novel cultural experience, getting a CELTA, and to be in a big city like Bangkok that can provide a lot of necessities that I need in my transition with limited savings. This is my return to Asia and teaching and the adventure to Thailand seems appropriate at this time in my life. |

Ah I see.
Quickly losing faith in this idea of just heading over to knock on doors; looking online there don't seem to be many short notice positions around... this of course is probably a good thing, lots here in S.K. because people just up and leave because their employers are lunatics Hmm... not sure I could wander around Japan not earning from now till Spring... |

Is there a card in Japan that can have money deposited into it (like traveller's checks, in a way) that doesn't require an alien card? |
