Hi,
I'm moving to Oman in the next few weeks and would like to know what the voltage/amps is used and what sort of electrical adapter I should take with me. Eg. two round pins, etc,...
Thanks.

In Oman, mostly they use the bulky British 3 prongs. All is 220. Adaptors are easily found if you need them.

UK 3-pronged plugs bulky? No, the Yankee ones are just plain wimpy. |

I thought it was you fellows who insist that size doesn't matter...

In Qatar all the sockets are 3 pronged yet most appliances are 2 pronged. Why is this? |

Tell me about it, it's frustrating because you have to buy an adaptor each time you buy a new product...somebody must be making a fortune out there from selling adaptors... |

Hi,
I'll be working for the Ministry of Higher Education of Oman. As yet, I don't know where they will locate me. I hope it's Muscat but probably elsewhere like Nizwa.
Why do you ask??

The obvious answer is that the electical standards were probably first set up by the Brits, so that all the wall plugs and switches are still British standard. But, they buy their electrical 'stuff' from the world and don't enforce that standard on the importers.
At least I found that there were tons of cheap adaptors. I especially liked the flat plastic ones that just take care of the ground and let you use the two prongs. I'm sure that all electricians are now appalled...

Don't you love it in class if you can't find an adaptor a student will pick up his pen and stick it in the hole so that you can plug the tape recorder in. I was shocked(not electrically) the first time I saw this. |

VS, it's power that matters, not the size of your prong!
Dammit, I STILL can't activate those emoticons. What am I doing wrong? |

Make mine a Shirley Temple... while I pretend that I have no idea what you are talking about.
DMB... definitely... I recall on a sleeper train in India, the attendant showed me how to use a match with each of the prongs to insure contact... All I could think was... 220 v and a match... eek...
(and now all of you get your minds out of the gutter... )
And speaking of being shocked electrically... when I was in Cairo - where nothing is grounded - I would get a shock every time I took my clothes out of the washer. Amazing how long it took me to learn to turn it off at the switch before putting my hand in. Apparently punishment doesn't improve my learning curve...
