It doesn't seem too bad financially from what I've seen 1,100 with housing.
Could someone with a recently finished MA, with no middle Eastern experience do better? |
Is this in Muscat? If they are providing housing on top of the 1,100 then it's possible to live and save a little if you're frugal. Muscat can be expensive depending on your lifestyle. If it's out of Muscat then you can live and save more. I personally wouldn't accept any job in Muscat on less than 15,000. What about the other benefits? Holidays? |
It would be based offshore at an oil company, so not in Muscat like I thought. This would involve 8 weeks there and then back to the UK for a month. It seems like it will be good to save some cash, but probably not too fun! |
Rotation can be ok but it means you have the expense of having to keep a base back home. Also you would need to check out the tax liability situation very carefully if you went home every time. Rigs are a good way to save money though! |

and home is a good place to spend money !
that's the danger I think - offsetting the rig time saving with a month home and the temptation of travel elsewhere, possibly somewhere warmer. Still, not a bad gig. |

Hey,
I was wondering if anybody had any experience with the Polyglot Institute in Muscat? |
No, but they pay sh*t! |
The current contract stipulates 850 OMR per month including housing allowance.
They don't just pay sh*t, they are sh*t employers (& that is from personal experience) They only pay higher salaries for working on contracts where a teacher is based, for instance, at a petroleum company in the desert. |

So basically, it is for non-Western, non-native speakers. That is about what I made in Oman in 1988... basically first job entry level back then. (though with a new MA)

Still a job for first timers who need experience.
The promise of more stimulating work never materialises |

I have recent experience working at Polyglot.
If you'd like to ask any questions, I'll try to answer them. |

What are your job conditions right now? I know a guy working there and he is always nagging about his job and students ( to be fair he seems to have little or no interest in the Middle East or its culture), he also says the pay is crappy but he has no way to find something else in any GCC country since his passport is not from a native English speaking country.
Basically I told him how my dream was to teach in Oman since I absolutely love the country (been there before) but he gave me nothing but negative feedback.
Anyways, I'm being mostly curious since I have already applied to basically all the places existing in Oman and it has landed me nothing (also wrong passport). Feel free to answer or ignore |

I've been lucky to have good students.
The pay is okay, depending on what you need.
The cost of living in Muscat is quite high and likely to increase.

- How many hours are you teaching?
- Are you provided with housing? (from my previous experience in Oman I know that finding a decent place to live in Muscat is such a pain)
- Are you required to give private lessons in different locations? and are they covering your transportation expenses? (since muscat has little to no public transportation)
- Is the company polite and fair with its employees?
Anyways, it is mostly curiosity and verification since as I told you I do not have a chance of being employed in Oman... |
