It´s a great honour for our damp little island that one of your states retains our nifty little flag. What do you think when you see our flags being burnt in places like Iran and Pakistan? Personaly, I couldn´t care less and wonder what these mobs get from it.
BTW Did you notice my use of ¨nifty¨? American word. |

Dear sheikh,
"What do you think when you see our flags being burnt in places like Iran and Pakistan?"
I think it may be time to buy some stock in a flag-making company.

P.S. Oh, your use of "nifty" was just jim-dandy. |

Try a Google search: "Easter Rising 1916". |

I wondered if the NZ Prime Minister had a business interest in flags. ¨Nifty¨ is a term I remember from golf commentaries. ¨John Schroeder hit a nifty drive on sixteen¨ Jim Dandy from films. |

Dear Phil_K,
Some old "colonies" seem to have refused the honor: "Myanmar (then Burma, independent 1947) chose not to join, and Ireland withdrew in 1949. A number of mainly Middle Eastern countries – former UK dependencies, mandates, protectorates or protected states – elected not to join the Commonwealth on independence."

Well, at the end of the day, what is a flag? A symbol, nothing more. However, I´m delighted that the Cook Islands and Tuvalu retain the Union flag on their own and Zimbabwe doesn´t.
What about anthems? That could be a good discussion. Last night I heard the Italian anthem before the Italy-Spain footie match. Rousing stuff but what else would you expect from them? I think ours (UK) is the worst. It´s like a dirge. |

Why do you think the UK anthem is the worst?
Is it because the anthem is about the Queen, and that God will save the Queen and not the people?!
BTW, the US anthem is stolen from a British drinking song, fantastical lyrics which no American has the brainpower to comprehend, and 3 other verses which nobody knows.

Do you have an encyclopedia in your brain? Anyway, I think our National Anthem is the worst because it´s a f****** boring tune. Listen to Sir Edward Elgar. Great stuff! |

Interesting. The French and Russian anthems are marvellous. Ours is s***. Scotland the Brave is different as is the Taffs´ national song. |

Do you think Flower of Scotland will be the official anthem of Scotland if it gets its independence?
I'd love to hear from scotty about Flower of Scotland and Wha Hae, Scotland the Brave anthems as an alternative to God Save the Queen? |

Mr S. It was Gregory, not me, who described your national anthem as a British drinking song.

Dear sheikh,
Quite right - but correcting Gregory is bootless; he's impervious to rectification.
But, by Jupiter, it needed to be said.
