Just went to Bahrain and, thanks to one poster's advice, was able to send money thru a company called BFC. BFC is all over the place in Bahrain- 40 branches. I went to the Baeb Il Bahrain commercial area- all taxi drivers know where it is. BFC is right in plain view and visible from all vintage points.

It is apparently one of the biggest money remittance companies in BAH.

Smaller ones seem to only send money to India, Philippines, etc.

Sent it on Friday and it was in my US account on Tuesday.

BFC is a very good company; cheerful, friendly service and all was really professional.

They wanted my passport with the visa stamp into BAH, as well. That was it.

They do require proof of source of income if you are sending more than BD 6000. Which is doable-- I just have to download payment slips. Mine was only BD 2600, so I didn't need to do it.

It was BD 8 to send. My US bank will charge $25 on their end. The exchange rate was also about 1% off the standard one. All on all, for sending USD 6900, I spent about USD 100.

There is another remittance company there which is called UAE Exchange which sends money to the USA. They apparently require proof of source if it is above BD 1000.

I paid 1 BD and got a customer card from them, as well.

Both BFC and UAE exchange now have me in their systems and next time I either have to give them my card or my past remittance slip.

I was very happy with this arrangement as I combined a relaxation trip to Bahrain with the sending of the money.

If anyone is working on a consultant's visa, this is a good way to send money home.

In Korea, this problem is solved with traveler's cheques, sent regular mail.

Is that a possibility?

To get travellers cheques you have to go through the same procedure as to remit. The answer is "No, this is not an answer" !

BFC opens on Friday at 8:00 AM. You can take a very early trip to BAH and be back on the same day.
