US dollars are the official currency for Cubans and foreigners alike when it comes to imported items and tourist-associated goods and services. Cuban pesos are still used in some places (ie. in smaller cities) but aren't accepted at all in the resort areas of the country.

This needs clarification. Pesos are not "used in some places" in Cuba: they're used everywhere because the peso remains the official currency. You do, however, need US dollars to buy imported and home-produced products in the TRDs (Tiendas de Recaudacion de Divisas). This has been the case since the commencement of the Special Period in (if I remember rightly) 1989. US dollars are also required in certain pharmacies and in many shops and supermarkets.
Just to confuse matters, there's a third unit of currency called the peso convertible which has the same value as the US dollar. For ideological reasons, the government wants to replace the dollar with the peso convertible, although that seems to be a long way off.
