failed both times.

Technically, they didn't try to leave Canada. They first ran a referendum in 1980 with this question:
The Government of Quebec has made public its proposal to negotiate a new agreement with the rest of Canada, based on the equality of nations; this agreement would enable Quebec to acquire the exclusive power to make its laws, levy its taxes and establish relations abroad - in other words, sovereignty - and at the same time to maintain with Canada an economic association including a common currency; any change in political status resulting from these negotiations will only be implemented with popular approval through another referendum; on these terms, do you give the Government of Quebec the mandate to negotiate the proposed agreement between Quebec and Canada?
and in 1995 with this question, a little closer to the idea of 'leaving':
Do you agree that Qubec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Qubec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?.
and yes both failed. Maybe they failed because neither question asked, outright:
Do you want to leave Canada? |

That's interesting. I don't know any that don't. Maybe it is a generational difference? |

Depends. If your pals are all in the True Blue Loyalist Defenders Flute band, maybe it is different.

One thing is pretty sure - not many people outside Scotland are interested.
That is good. I would be nervous if they were. We can do without foreign intervention, thank you ! |

Looking at the Great Edinburgh Tram Fiasco, I have a certain amount of pessimism about the future of an independent Scotland. |

Are you joking or maybe you are mentally deranged? I, for one, am Scottish and British and proud of being both. I happen to know umpteen people who would agree with me. Having said that, Im sure the English would be glad to see tha back of us.
How much did the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh finally cost? |

I'd love for you all to do without the foreign intervention that comes in the form of money from the English taxpayer.
Bye bye Scotland? God speed the day, I say. |

Dear TheHanMan
Hasn't North Sea oil been good to perfidious Albion?
