I get tired of colleagues here in KSA who talk as if Bahrain were some sort of centre of culture and enlightenment.
Whatever it is, it is not that ! |

It's not THAT bad!
I went for a long weekend and enjoyed it. I wouldn't live there as it's too small for me, but what I saw of it was nice...great restaurants, chilled out atmosphere etc... |

Retail therapy, consumerism, hookers and bars.
I think I would prefer Yemen ! |

Anyone who stays at the Tylos should not talk about hookers and bars!!
Maybe it is the Indian dancers? |

Well guys Bahrain is more "normal" than Saudi, but that isn't hard, is it? |
Saudi is well-known to be a perverse, restricted society.
One of the tragedies is that despite all of the riches from oil and opportunities to invest it fails to impress.
It is not difficult to appreciate how so many people living in The Desert see attractions of Bahrain.
Little Bahrain suffers because it is so close and easily accessible from KSA. As one of my students sagely remarked, "Bahrain is Saudi's toliet." And you do see many Saudi citizens using it to drink to excess, dance and chat to members of the opposite sex - sometimes to excess. In some ways understandable when measured against the ridiculous regime imposed in their own country.
Bahrain is a decent place to enjoy a weekend away from the rigours of KSA. |

This is a very old thread... and JohnSlat has not posted here for a couple of years. But, I met him last year for coffee and he is retired in America and doing well.
(and no, he's not a millionaire... )

I miss John's posts here. He had a way with words.
Nothing wrong with rants... but you do need to control the personal attacks.

John Slat is living proof that there is - in some cases- life after Saudi Arabia. |
